A poll for your favorite grocery supermarket in the UK.
« on: September 12, 2010, 03:50:01 PM »
I'm out of touch with the supermarkets in the UK but I would like to know which would be your favorite one to shop in.
Some of you have mentioned there is maybe only one in your area so there is little or no choice.
Keeping in mind that some of you, and I would include myself in this group, prefer shopping at the small independent shops, butchers, bakers, greengrocers etc. From what I've heard I wouldn't like Tesco (is that the right name?) but I'm inconsistent because maybe I don't like to go Walmart but I'm in there a few times a month.
There are about severn? big chain super markets right?
Sainsbury, Tesco, M&S, .........
Your opinions please.

For what purpose do you want to know? Are you moving back Jim? You can check out what they sell online for each store. I think this topic has been discussed a lot on this forum and it depends on a lot of things, including income.

I have put a poll on this for you!  :D

(Quick internet search for the Top 10 UK Supermarkets & input those choices.)

I vote Other.  I prefer:  local butcher, local green grocer, local deli, Leeds city market, farmers markets, etc.

Morrisons is the closest supermarket, both by where I live and where I work (two different Morrisons).  Sainsburys is easy to get to as well.  I think there's an Asda not far from us as well, however I have never been there...not sure how to get there...because DH has always avoided Asda & I have (so far) by default.  But really no favourite supermarket - we like the little guys!

I like different supermarkets for different things, I do my weekly shop generally at Asda because its near my home, and its next to Costco, where I also shop a lot. If I want to do a big shop with meat & fish, I usually choose Morrisons because their butcher & fishmonger are the best imo. I also shop locally at the greengrocers on ocassion, but generally, I like Morrisons & Asda, with a Costco shop thrown in every other week or so.

We shop at ASDA because it's generally cheaper...however, before we had to watch our budget we prefer to shop at Morrisons and still do on the odd occaision as I find their quality and selection is excellent as well as the overall 'feel' of the place. I'd compare it to Safeway back in California...not necessairly the cheapest but a great place to shop.

I vote 'other' as well. But for cleaning supplies, baking things, etc., I tend to go to Tesco just because it's our closest shop (plus it has a Costa Coffee overlooking the beach, so that's a bonus).  ;)

We get groceries delivered from Tescos but if we need to pick up something in town we usually go to M&S. I tend to have better interactions with the staff at M&S - they don't look at me like I'm horrible because I had the temerity to ask where something is or I'm stupid because I didn't understand something the checker mumbled at me. Not that going to the grocery store is one of my least favorite things to do in the UK or anything :)

I like Sainsbury's the most. We get our monthly staples delivered from there - I think if we bought name brands it would be tesco, but we are on a budget and buy the cheapo store brand and we just prefer Sainsbury's and it's not much more than the others for what we buy.

I tend to pick up bits and bobs from the Tesco Metro in town or from Lidl, depending on what we need and how much money we have.

I despise Asda and if I never set another foot in one I'd be happy. Especially since it's only redeeming feature (kraft mac and cheese) appears to have been discontinued at the one near me...

Oh - another one of my various 'others' - we get deliveries (but not every week) from an organic veg box service as well:

http://www.riverford.co.uk/

They have a farm local to us, and you get a lot for what you pay!  :)

I'm surprised the number voting for Waitrose - I agree it's a nice store, but I find it waaay overpriced & quality not any better than what I can find elsewhere for less.

I love riverford! We get a mini fruit and veg box each week. Soooo good.  And so easy. Plus, I get to eat random things (like turnips!) I would never, ever buy. Still haven't totally sold the hubby on the veggies are awesome thing, but he does rave about the cherry tomato pack we got last week.

We do some & some.  DH likes to support our local green grocer, but they went through a period when I didn't think the quality or quantity was as good for what we were paying.  We eat lots of veg.  So we get a Riverford veg box some weeks & some weeks we get more stuff at the green grocer.  We don't tend to get the fruit from Riverford - well we did once & most of it was from outside the UK anyway (as fruit tends to be except for this time of year)...and we'd just rather hand select our own fruit.

I voted for Sainsburys.  We have a rather large store within walking distance of us.  Their basic vegtables/fruits are good.
I also like shopping at Lidl.  Ocado is good for delivery.

I voted for Marks & Spencer. Possibly just for their shoes.  ;)
