Oh - another one of my various 'others' - we get deliveries (but not every week) from an organic veg box service as well:

http://www.riverford.co.uk/

They have a farm local to us, and you get a lot for what you pay!  :)

I'm surprised the number voting for Waitrose - I agree it's a nice store, but I find it waaay overpriced & quality not any better than what I can find elsewhere for less.

Really? I do ocado and their store range of chicken has put me off other chickens for life.

I went to morrisons the other day to pick something up for dinner and their average chicken was so pumped full of water it looked disgusting, to match store brand waitrose I'd have had to buy organic and that would cost more than the basic store brand Waitrose.

I think Waitrose is only expensive if you buy branded items, but similar quality meat is cheaper or as cheap at Waitrose as anywhere else.

I buy next to nothing packaged or branded, just veggies and meat really, I'd like to switch to a meat and a veg box but I'm never home and there's nowhere to leave the deliveries.

I go to the Co-Op a lot because it's on my walking route, but if all shops were equally available I would probably pick Sainsburys so that's what I voted for.  I've never been to Asda and have only been to a Lidl once.  We have a Saturday morning farmers' market in our town that's fantastic.  It beats all shops except on the point of convenience.

I shop at Waitrose because they're the closest to me.  In turn, I do Ocado for delivery because I've become the most familiar with Waitrose offerings.  I have 2 decent-size Waitrose stores I can walk to in under 10 minutes, otherwise, it's the 2-aisle mini-Tesco and that's only good for emergencies or milk, OJ, butter, etc -- and even then, it's a crap shoot as to what's in stock.

There nearest big Sainsburys requires a tube ride or 20+ minutes on the bus, Morrisons is an even longer journey and I have no idea where the nearest big Tesco is located.

I have to go with Waitrose, despite the fact that I can't normally afford to shop there as well as the fact there's only a handful of them up this way.  ;)  I just love the quality of the stuff they have, at least compared to the other shops in the West End.  I also like their vast cheese selection! Huuuuge selling point for me!

Otherwise, it's a mix of all of them, depending on what I'm looking for/where I am.  Usually, I end up at Tesco or Morrison's, though the massive 24-hour Asda near my new place is nice for shopping in at 7AM on a Sunday.  I hate grocery shopping when it's crowded and will do what I can to avoid it!  :P

For me the issue is preference versus ease. I'd like to be able to do more market stuff, but we are pretty time poor. Oh, and the organic shop in the city centre. I do go to the Asian supermarket in the city centre for my Asian stuff, though. So, favourite would be other, main would be Tesco and Sainsbury's would be stand by (or maybe Waitrose in the future).

We use Sainsbury's to get odds and ends but do Tesco delivery as that is what we signed up for when we moved to Reading and just never changed. lazy, I know.  ::)

A Waitrose is opening near us soon and I've always liked it for fancier odds and ends, but would never go there for a full shop.

Same here & I kind of view Sainsburys the same way.  Both Waitrose & Sainsburys often carry fancier foodie bits that other stores don't carry - posh nibbles & things like that for special occasions.   [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

In the summer, Waitrose was selling strawberries for twice the price that other shops were.  On a family hol over a week this summer, we had strawberries from Asda (MIL/FIL bought), Morrisons (we bought), Waitrose (BIL bought - he worships at the altar of Waitrose), and Co-Op (we bought to replenish supplies).  All of the strawberries were equally delicious - the Waitrose ones were just double the price of the others.

We buy our meat from our butcher - best quality, reasonable price, local provenance (all from the Yorkshire Dales, near to us).

But for posh food - and Libbys pumpkin (if they have it this year?!)...MLG, when is that Waitrose going to be open?  :D

I usually shop at Waitrose,Sainsbury and Costco, with the odd trip to tesco and lidl, and we use our local butcher often.  Waitrose certainly doesn't have as many things on offer as the other stores, but when I compare basic items that i often buy (organic milk, juice, butter flour etc)  the normal price difference is minimal (less than 3p difference).  Waitrose has lots of expensive items that are not available elsewhere which adds to the bill, but we do use those items.  I was shocked to try ASDA one day and two items I was looking for were 5 p more than at Waitrose.....  I think it depends on what you are buying, and the offers are certainly worth to other stores for.  I live in London, by the way.

Well I prefer other - Most of the time get my veg delivered or I buy through farmers stands/farmers market-and I get my milk delivered- Like to go to the butchers too (when I can) or buy meat at the farmers stands/market or get it delivered with my veg.

I end up in Tesco 99% of the time-(there's one on my way home from work and super handy)-  and they're actually one of the world's top environmentally friendly ranked companies- believe it or not-
Morrisons is way too overpriced for the same thing I could get at Tesco- and I am not in town enough to justify it anyways- nor am I not in town enough to go to M&S -

I find Lidl fun at Christmas- mostly because I like the German Christmas sweeties. Haven't been to Aldi yet.

I go to my wee Co-op for random top ups.

They're putting in an ASDA soon- which I really, really, really, don't want- but at least it will be good for driving down Tesco's prices who currently can do whatever they want since there's no real competition- and then all the people will shop at ASDA-so I can then shop in Tesco's in peace!!!!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

I was talking to a friend the other night who has worked in management at Tesco, Safeway and M&S. She said that all fruit & veg is graded, which I didn't know. M&S always gets the top grade stuff. Which shows in their price, but at least you know you're getting good quality. Tesco is pretty high - Grade 1 mostly. But Morrison's gets Grade 3.

It doesn't really mean much to me since I mostly buy fruit & veg from farm shops, but sometimes I'm running late, and in a pinch I'll pick up something from the supermarket. Or, obviously, if it's something like oranges or lemons that I can't buy locally-produced. But it's still pretty interesting!

Oh & it's going to be Waitrose Food & Home - Mr MLG is considering a store card for the first time in our lives. We don't normally consider store cards.

Hey I wonder if that's a concession to that we were going to get a John Lewis here, but then the recession came & I'm not sure what happened to John Lewis but he never came here.  So maybe they're packing it all into one store?

Does Waitrose have a store card?  Or is it only Waitrose Food & Home that does?

I like the size of Lidl and Aldi, the feel of Morrsion's (hubby says it's very New England-y).  Sainsbury's basic range are quite good and we've got one fairly close by.

We get our meat from the local butcher frozen about every 5-6 weeks, milk and eggs delivered and a fruit and veg box delivered weekly so we don't buy that much from big shops really.

Saying that, when our kitchen is finished we're planning a HUGE Costco run.
