Help with pet reservation and tick/tapeworm treatment!
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:16:49 PM »
Help!

I just called Continental to book the flight for my cat. Since we are trying to leave on Thursday 7 October at 10:25 AM(I will have to drop him off at 8AM-8:25AM the same day) the agent said I have to bring George to vet to get tick/tapeworm treat on either Sun 3 Oct or Mon 4 Oct 8AM-8:25AM. I'm so confused about this 24hr and 48 hr thing. Does this sound right?

Our vet isn't open on Sunday. Unfortunately my vet (that's been filling and signing all our paperwork) will be on holiday on Monday! Can another vet administer and sign off on the tick and tapeworm treatment?

If you're checking your pet in at 8am on October 7, you need to have the tick/tapeworm treatment administered between 8am October 5 and 8am October 6. Take the time of check-in, subtract 24 hours...that's the latest you can get it done. Take another 24 hours off that, and that's the earliest you can get it done. So, given normal vet hours, try to get an appointment for sometime after 8am on Tuesday October 5 and you'll be fine.

Another vet can administer the tick/tapeworm, though. I did all my PETS stuff in North Carolina, but my pets were in Maryland with my parents when they traveled. My mom took them to their USDA-approved vet and it was fine.

Thank you soo much equestrianerd! I can't tell you how valuable and comforting your help has been during this stressful process.

Yeah, I didn't think it sounded quite right what the Continental agent told me. I will have to call my vet back and see if there is an opening on Tuesday.  :)

Hope it works out. :) I don't think the tick/tapeworm needs to be done by a USDA-approved vet, but I had my mom make sure her vet was, just to be on the safe side.

Okay, I've scheduled an appointment for 9:15AM on Tuesday and will get the fit to fly certificate then as well.

Glad I got that sorted. I almost had a heart attack! Well, my vet should be back from holiday then, so we'll be fine.

Thanks again!  :)

We just went through this 2 weeks ago and the timeline is greater than 24 hours and less than 48 hours before checking in the animal for the flight.
We had a minor fiasco with this part as the vet we were using had a family emergency and had to leave town the morning we were to get the tick/tapeworm, so they couldn't / wouldn't do it. Couldn't find anyone else to do it that day, so we ended up doing it the morning of the flight (flight check in was at 3pm). This caused a lot of stress for us but turned out alright. The airline took him no problems. We just ended up having a slight delay at the Animal Reception Center at Heathrow. The tick/tapeworm timeline is not flexible so we had to drive back down to london the following day and pick up our dog.

Thanks beggse for the consolation! I'm so sorry that you had to go through that mess to get your dog. Thankfully, you didn't have to put him in quarantine for a long time afterward. Hope he is adjusting fine.  :)
