What is the best option if I am unemployed now?
« on: September 17, 2010, 01:18:15 AM »
I am not sure if this is the right place to post so I apologize in advance. Need a little venting here and also some outsiders and other parents advice.

I recently married my Brit husband, in July. We had plan for me and my son to move over to England after my son (14 years old) finishes his 9th grade. When I broke down the news about the move to my son back in January, he wasn't happy about it but little by little he accepted the idea and is now excited about the move. The problem is that I told him we will stay in AZ until May when school finishes but something unexpected happend that might change the plans.

A couple of weeks ago, I lost my job. Since, I have been looking non stop, sending resumes everywhere but not luck so far. My company will pay me till the end of September as well as my unused vacation time. All that will only last me till November and if the job hunt doesn't change, I will have to use my savings that were supposed to be for the visa fees, plane tickets and the move. I never thought "this will happend to me" thing, will actually happen. I knew the job market was bad but you never feel it until you are the unemployed one.

My husband suggested we move sooner, in January. I am somehow happy about the idea but at the same time I am scared and feeling very guilty if we do because I don't want to let my son down.

So, I was thinking about maybe moving to a cheaper place, even if it is a one bedroom apartment until my son is done with school and working doing anything for now, using some of the savings and leave in May as planned.

It's been only 2 weeks since I lost my job but to me, it feels like forever and I am starting to get desperate. I have worked my entire life and the feeling of not being in control is freaking me out. The fear of not being able to provide for my son, is really killing me.

Today, I went and applied for at a few restaurants and see if I can get a job as a waitress for now.

My big concern is how is my son going to take the news of the possible earlier move, the school transition, the shock, etc.

How difficult will it be to find my son a place at a school in January? I was not prepared for this :(

What has your son said about it? At 14 perhaps he doesn't need every single detail about the financial situation, but he's certainly old enough to know that your family may need to change their plans. In fact, putting him into the information loop now will help him prepare if you do decide that you should move earlier than originally planned.

I haven't said anything to him yet because my husband and I just talked about it this afternoon. DH and I will talk tomorrow to make this plan official or find another way for us to stay here until May. Once the decision is made, we will talk to my son.
