so overwhelmed! I need some guidance
« on: September 17, 2010, 03:27:06 AM »
Hello everybody :] I'm from Michigan and my boyfriend met when we were 16 on family vacations. Well we're both 21 now, and while we kept in contact after we've met, we've been in this long distance relationship for a year and a half now. He's recently just spent three months with me this summer, actually just left Sunday, anyway we decided the next thing we should do is get married next summer after I get my associates and I can move home with him a couple months after.
Now, with everything I've read it looks like the easiest and most financially responsible way to go about it would be to marry in the US and then apply for a spouse visa. That way, once I have the visa I can work over there instead of living on a fiancee visa without any income on my part. Is this really the easiest approach? or could it go wrong?
Also, would it matter if we lived with his parents for a couple months until we have enough saved for our own place? or will our chances of getting a visa be better if we had our own place lined up?
And what is everyone's experience with how much money is necessary to show that he can support us?

Thank you everyone!

Yes your thinking is correct in terms of it being easier if you marry in the US and apply for the spousal from there. I also don't see why it would go wrong. Also, you are allowed to live with his parents so you won't be refused because of that either. You do need to provide sufficient documentation however. Such as a letter from the parents stating that it's fine that you live with them. The amount of money he needs should be more than what a couple would get in benefits. So it's something in the region of £103/week after rent and council tax.

Thank you so much for your speedy response  :) I've just been so nervous that what I read on the forums is misleading, and I really don't want to go about it wrong. So it's always good to hear from people that have been there before.
