When my husband and I were in an LDR 13 years ago, we only just had email (and it was like on a dial up) and when I rang him on the phone, it cost like $1 a minute....I couldn't even have IMAGINED Skype would exist one day! LOL!!

Ah, these young people, they don't know they're born!

Me too, racheeeee! I'd have dearly loved skype. Then again it was probably what made our relationship - that we had to try so hard to be together. There were some fierce phone bills!

So this.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

We had a weekly phone date at an appointed time. The rest was by email, which was not super accessible then!  :)

I used to write him LETTERS!! With paper, and a pen, and a stamp!!! Imagine that! And, we have been happily married for 11 years and we have two kids. So it must have been okay!

Hubby and I have been married 3 years, together just over 4.  I don't know if there was Skype even just 4 years ago.  We sent each other texts and set up a few phone dates.  We also did letters, even though we had texts as we both really knew how much more you can express to each other in a thoughtfully written letter.

We still did letters even though we had Skype! I think my friends thought us a bit odd for writing letters to each other when we practically emailed every day, but there's something that's so nice and more personal about a letter.

Yup. Ditto. Somewhere we have all the handwritten letter and emails. I think they are clogging up the loft.  :P

And we're happily married for nearly 11 years, so hey!  :D

Sorry, but its Monday and I'm too grouchy to sugar coat... have you ever seen 'He's Just Not That Into You'?

I was looking at your older posts and saw that you have never met your boyfriend in person and are thinking of marrying him the first time you see him in the UK.

DH and I did get engaged on my first visit to see him. However, we had been speaking to each other on the internet for years (we met through an internet forum), and until I met him in person, I wasn't sure if there would even be any sexual chemistry or we would just remain good friends.

Are you sure that you and your boyfriend are on the same wavelength? I have to admit that if someone I had never met in person before said he wanted to move across an ocean to live with me and marry me as soon as he got there, I would be kind of freaked.

Yay, we wrote letters too! I'm not sure if skype was available in 2004 and if we were way out of the loop or something but we were just fine with letters and phone calls, a few emails here and there.

I agree with sweetpeach. Atleast one visit needs to happen imo. DH and I married very young but we had years of visits/LDR before that and we lived together for a year.

Hee!  I remember those days.  Mr. K and I were talking the other day about all the cool things we can now do with our IPhones that were unimaginable back in the early days of our romance!

DH and I started off as pen pals, in 1997-so all we had was pen and paper too! We still have each other's cards, letters, gifts from all of our years spent apart. We got into yahoo chat rooms when the internet became a big thing, but we'd still write pen and paper letters as well. It was momentous in our relationship when we could finally email each other! When we finally phoned each other, it was for 30 min for each person, to save on the phone bill. I used a phone card on my mobile and he had to pay the phone bill on the BT land line.

We didn't have Skype until my last year in the States, 2008. I'd wake up every Saturday morning at 6am, because that was....I forget what time it was in the UK, but, it was always better for me, because my roommate was gone, and I could have my time with DH. It was never easy, but, I knew it was never going to be. But, if you're both committed to it, it works out in the end.  ;)

My fiance and I have both been online practically since there's been an online.  I was using AOL chat rooms, etc. back in '96, and he'd already been on usenet, MUDs, IRC, etc. for a few years by that point.  I can't imagine having had to rely on the phone and snail mail!

Since we were introduced 3 years ago, we've spent several hours a day IMing or using voice/video chat.  But the thing is, that wasn't something we ever had to schedule.  We're just both always online.  It's just what we do.  We'd be doing it anyway.  It's natural for us, and so we just take for granted that the other one will always be on the other end of the connection.  I think that's part of the reason we've been able to have a successful LDR.  The distance part just didn't feel so artificial for us.
