Visiting NYC With Dogs
« on: September 20, 2010, 05:34:46 PM »
We are looking to fly to the UK with our dogs in about a month, however we want to avoid the heat embargo in Phoenix so we are thinking of driving to NYC, getting the tick/tapeworm treatment done and flying from Newark or JFK.

My only experience of Manhattan was an overnight stay at Columbia University 13 years ago. My wife has never been.

Seeing as we would be in the area it would be nice to do some sightseeing, but my impression of Manhattan is confusing traffic insanity.

Our dogs are big so crating them for the ferry, subway or buses is not practical. I understand that taxis may or may not pick you up with dogs. I know there are expensive pet-friendly taxis. But what about driving and parking ourselves, for example Central Park? Is that crazy or realistic?

Is it practical to book taxis in advance with dogs or is that also a problem?

thanks, Andy

Hi Andy

Need more information on the section you mention to bring the dogs to the UK.

Please take a look over in the Pets section for more information, but from what you've just mentioned you won't be allowed to bring the dogs into the UK. There is a 6 months quarantine period I believe. In order to bring the pets over properly, you need to speak with your local vet, who then can start the correct procedure whilst the dogs are in the USA. In effect, the quarantine period is served in the USA under the guidelines of the program. I'm not sure if you can get everything done within a month, and certainly not by turning up in NYC, getting some procedures done and bringing them over.

If things have changed recently, then apologies for getting the above incorrect.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

You can't do it in one month - it takes seven. But if we can't fly out of our local airport because of the heat then we need the tick/tapeworm treatment done in the same city we are flying out of.
