Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
« on: September 21, 2010, 08:53:22 AM »
Has anyone else watched this? It just started Sunday night and it was quite good, I have good feeling about it.  Since we were in Atlantic City we saw signs for it EVERYWHERE so of course I had to watch.

Here is a brief part from wikipedi
Boardwalk Empire is an American television series from premium cable network HBO, set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era. Starring Steve Buscemi, the show is adapted from Nelson Johnson's book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City by Emmy award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter of The Sopranos.

Martin Scorsese did the first episode and man could I tell, he moved the camera slowly in some parts and I felt like I was watching an old movie (maybe it was just me).

Steve Buscemi is in it, and I think he is great! If you watched what did you think?

Wow, this sounds good!  I wonder if I can catch it on BBCi-player or a similar computer site as we don't have actual TV.

I grew up going to Atlantic City every summer for the whole summer and remember AC from the late 60's onward.  It was a magical place when you were a kid--it's so different now as all (or most) of the old historic buildings were torn down when the casinos came in.  My grandparents also lived and worked in AC.

Its on HBO in the states...I watched it on casttv.com even though I can now watch anything on my HAVA player in Austin.

Andee - AC has WAY changed but Kevin loved Brigatine beach when we went last week (gosh seems so much farther away).

It is neat to see AC back in the day and I almost wish I read the book this was based on.

Starts on Sky early next year I think, part of the deal that sky signed with HBO.

As an aside....I mentioned this programme to DW last night and after looking at me quite stunned she said "is that about mafia?", I said "I think so, it's about prohibition in Atlantic City" and she said she knew the guy who wrote the book!

How cool is that?!

Tykeman....I heard rumors HBO is coming to the UK b/c FX was posting about don't worry we still own the rights to True blood ect...
I would be excited if we got HBO here - I would pay for it!

That is super cool she knew the guy!  First episode brings Al Capone in so it could get good!

I don't think we are getting HBO, rather that Sky have signed a deal to take all the HBO new programming and rights to previously shown programmes. So I expect it to be on Sky1

You can get HBO in the UK, but it is not the same as the US. I think it was originally offered from Virgin, but now Sky will have it, though they will not show the up-to-date programming until all other existing contracts have run out (ex- True Blood is shown on FX, new episodes will not run on UK HBO until the FX contract is up... so at least one more season before the rights are up for grabs)

I am definitely looking for Boardwalk Empire on the internets though!

We watched the first episode two nights ago.  Hubby found it online somewhere.  It was really good!  Love the costumes.

I need to ask my Mom, but I think my Grandmother would have been a young girl in AC in 1920.  Plus they did some really slavish re-creations of what AC would have looked like back then, and in fact even when I was a kid in the 70's many of those buildings and shop fronts were still standing (before the casinos came in and knocked it all down).

Andee - glad you found it!
I know I have seen pictures from step grandparents and my stepdad who were always from south jersey and amazed to see a few similar things...

Apprently it was filmed in Brooklyn

I'm halfway through the first episode and, although I think it's very good and will definitely watch again, it has one major flaw that is bugging the hell out of me. Everything is so clean! That's not right! Where the "poor people" live was immaculate. The docks where the fishermen were working were spotless. Life isn't like that! This programme needs a lot more grime!

I thought it was okay, but it's not immersive enough for me, it doesn't have the attention to detail that Mad Men does and I can't get over the fact that it's a TV show as too much is illusion breaking, I agree with Chary, it's too clean, even the poor scamps are clean, but also the use of computer effects to "fill" the backgrounds looks jarring and off to me.
