My American Sony TV ... compatiable in the UK?
« on: September 23, 2010, 07:30:22 PM »
So, I checked the watt on the back and was told if it says 120-240 it is in terms of power supply.  However, someone said you can get a converter and it should work over there in terms of their system compared to ours.  So, I called Sony and they state you can get a converter but it's not a guarantee it will work.

Did anyone else take tv's over there and have issue or even a Sony Bravia?

If it's an older CRT TV (the big heavy kind that everyone had before flat screen TVs) you're probably out of luck.

If it's a newer LCD or plasma, you might be able to bring it over and have it work.  One of the issues you may run into, though, is a lot of audio/video equipment in the UK connects to each other via SCART connections, which are not used in the US.  If, however, your equipment and your TV has composite RCA connectors (usually a set of three which are yellow, white, and red) or component RCA (a set of three which are red, blue and green) or HDMI, it might work.

That's about as good an answer as I can give without more information.  If you post the exact model number, I might be able to figure it out from info on the web.

[EDITED TO ADD]  We've got a UK Bravia, and having looked into it a bit more through the manual and a little Googling, there's not a definitive answer, but it doesn't look too good.  The tuner most likely will not pick up UK broadcasts, but you might be able to plug in a cable/satellite box and have it work.  If I were in your shoes I'd sell the US TV and put the money toward buying a new one in the UK that you can be sure will work.

Thanks Camoscato.  I decided to leave it with my dad.  I called Sony myself and they said I would need a converter and there was no guarantee.  I figure rather than risk it, spend the money to ship it, I'm better off just buying new.

And it's not an older one.  Brand new, thin, lovely tv but just not going to risk it.

Thanks again!

Hiya

this topic does pop up every so often!

It is indeed best to leave the TV in the USA, if you'd had it shipped within perhaps a container along with other belongings then you might've got away with getting it here. The TV will work here, but in a limited way, you'd need multi system version DVD players etc, and/or signal/TV System converter boxes etc. If you'd not been able to ship that way, then sending it via courier would've cost you a good 2-300 dollars I'd have thought - insuring it would have been a good part of that price.

Overall, not really a good idea and best to buy a TV from here. There are 'some' bargain places to get electronics in the UK, however with the places like Comet, Currys that you can visit in store, and the online discounters who offer even keener prcing, you'll pickup a good brand Plasma 46-50inch item at around £500-750 quite easily.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I would just leave it behind and buy a new one when you get here. The pricing isn't as outrageous as you may think. We just purchased a gorgeous new tv from Curry's.

I don't know what type/size of housing you have lined up, but I don't think I would be able to handle a television screen larger than 40 inches here in any house that I've seen. We settled on a 32" lcd and that fills our tiny lounge PLENTY!
