IKEA Home Delivery
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:15:11 PM »
BF and I have picked out some stuff on the IKEA website we want to get, but some of the stuff is only available for in-store purchase, so I've decided to go the route of going to the shop, purchasing it all and arranging a delivery to the flat with their same/next day delivery service.

Where I'm moving to is equidistant from the stores in Milton Keynes and Wembley, so I'm trying to decide which to go with. Wembley is easier to get to right now, though.

Milton Keynes at least has their prices listed online, which don't seem too bad considering I'll be in zone C: http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/img/local_store_info/milton_keynes/milton_keynes_delivery_rates.pdf

And Wembley is currently offering £10 off home delivery, but I can't find their prices and the woman I talked to on their help line provided me with numbers to call that weren't in service anymore.  ::)

Has anyone used IKEA Home Delivery before? Was it a quick delivery time? And what were the charges? Would you say it's worth the expense?
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

I bought absolutely everything a month ago and used the home delivery. I think it might vary from area to area but considering how much I got I found it to be good value, everything was delivered exactly when they said it would be, even if they did moan about taking everything up to an attic flat haha. I think I got charged about £40 for our delivery.

I got through to IKEA Gateshead fine so you may have just got someone incompetent, also not sure if IKEA is an 0845 number so might want to try saynoto0870.com and 0800buster.co.uk if phoning from a mobile.

Thanks for sharing that! It's good to know they'll bring it to the flat, too, as I'm three flights up with no lift (and no muscles)! Was it a same/next day service? Or did it take longer?

I managed to get through to IKEA Wembley and they have the same delivery charges as Milton Keynes for my area, so I'll probably go there since it's so much easier to get to. :D

Hah yeah they may not be too impressed but they will take it up the stairs, the terms are they will put everything into one room of your choice.

The service I got was that it was next day unless it was fully booked, then they will just allocate it the day after, but they would inform you of this when you go to the home delivery section. You can also ask IKEA customer services for their number and they will tell you over the phone before you leave.

My husband ordered a mattress with home delivery a few weeks back and literally the only issue he had was that he could only meet them on Saturdays so he had to wait an extra week since the coming Saturday was booked. They were great.

Whole new world for a Southern gardener, but I'm very happy.

We used home delivery last year and will do so again in the near future -- just as soon as I can get my husband to go with me.   ::)

Anyway, we had a charge of £60 from Ikea Wembley to a central London postcode.  We shopped on Saturday afternoon and it was delivered by early afternoon the next day, which was a Sunday.  They called earlyish Sunday morning to give us a delivery window, and they were right on time.  We were really pleased.

We got some wardrobes delivered a few months ago, the Coventry location was running a £5 delivery special at the time.  Great service even with them being extra busy because of the deal.  worth checking if the prices are the same for delivery if you have an IKEA family card, they've just changed the delivery rates in Coventry.  Plus you get free tea or coffee with one on weekdays so it's a nice free perk.

I agree with getting the IKEA family Card - its free and you can do it online.
I get coupons like £10 off £60 spent and also the free tea or coffee when you go ;-)

I do like the IKEA family lotion as my spare in the bathroom

I just went through this process! Things were delivered yesterday :)

Thursday night- went to Ikea. Having picked up everything we wanted from the warehouse-type section, we checked out as the store was closing. We wandered on over to the ''Home Delivery'' area, paid  £30, and were given a time for Saturday of ''between 8am and 8pm''.

Saturday- Delivery guys call at 9am to let us know they'll be there in an hour.  They ended up arriving maybe 20-30 minutes after the given time, but it was fine for us, since DB wasn't actually in Nottingham at the time.  Delivery guys show up (it's not actually IKEA delivery guys, it's someone who contracts for them.)  They unload our things from the truck, and check to make sure they've gotten the right number of items. We sign off, saying nothing was damaged and that we've gotten everything we bought.  I wasn't aware that they would deliver things to the room of our choice, though...so they left everything in the stairwell landing for us to bring up, apart from our mattress (which they did bring up to the room, which was also 3 flights up, since I don't think the mattress would have fit in the lift)

Overall, I am very satisfied with their service.  I was pleased to find out that in my area, it was pretty much ''next day'', and we could get everything shipped relatively inexpensively.  DB's mum kept forecefully telling/nagging me to buy a bed through Argos.  When I looked at Argos, and saw up to 21 days delivery on the mattress/frame, I said to myself ''aww he11 no!'' Especially since you can't even ''Try it on'' there, so to speak!

So, Yay to Ikea!

So I've just barely been in the UK for a week and managed to find a flat. Unfortunately, it's unfurnished, so I guess an IKEA shopping spree is in my future. I found this thread incredibly helpful, but I was wondering if it's possible to have the home delivery drop off not only bulky things but also smaller things that one could transport in a car? Obviously this would not make sense if you were only buying a couple of things, but I'll likely be buying things requiring home delivery, so I figured it would make sense to just have them deliver everything rather than lugging things on the tram and tube.

We had this issue, too.  We were moving into an unfurnished flat, so we bought dishes and things as well as furniture items.  We asked if they would also deliver the smaller stuff, but they said no.  This was IKEA Wembly last July.  That store also has a minicab service, which I found to be fairly expensive -- £40 from there to central London.  In hindsight, I'd have booked a minicab myself and probably paid around half.  But I was totally loaded down and exhausted.  My crap filled the car, and I would never have made it on the tube.

Like I said, I can only speak to Wembley -- I'd call the store you're going to and see what they say.

ETA:  When we used it, the minicab service was separate from the delivery service.  They wouldn't bring furniture in "their" minicab.  So we ended up shelling out for both delivery and minicab.  I could definitely have planned that better.

I just went to Wembley yesterday. It must have been a sight seeing someone my size (under five foot, under 90 pounds), pushing a trolley of goods to furnish an entire flat, especially as the mattress barely fit on and seemed to be balancing itself on my head.  ::)

Anyway, I have arranged home delivery for Saturday, so I will post to say if all goes according to plan.

I barely bought any small things because I had a feeling the delivery people wouldn't do dishes and such, and those things I bought I brought back with me on the train. One couple in the queue with me were advised to book a minicab which would take everything and at least deliver that day (their original quote date was in two days). While it did seem expensive for a minicab, it might be worth it. Or you could look into hiring a man and van, as many of them offer IKEA services and will probably turn out to be much cheaper. You can find many of them on gumtree (http://www.gumtree.com/london/removal-services_142_1.html). Or you can look into ordering your dishes and smaller things from somewhere that does offer delivery.

I second the recommendation to call the store. You can also chat with a customer service representative through their website, which might be useful as you can request the transcript via email and take it to the store in case they dispute what you've been told. Good luck!

In response to the small things quickly, I packed everything into blue bags and these were included in my delivery, everything turned up the next day fine.

Same here :) The blue bags were just next to the checkout at my store.  So we stuffed in some throw pillows, a blanket, random mugs/jars/pans and the like, and everything arrived in perfect condition.
