I always rinse and it drives me crazy when people don't. I was working with a woman from Jamaica once and we always washed the dishes BEFORE we used them because we didn't trust the way Brits wash dishes. :P

My BF has one of those HORRIBLE wash bins for the sink and refuses to get rid of it. He fills it up with hot water, puts some soap in it, then just puts the dishes in, scrubs and leaves them on the rack to dry. Ew ew ew! He won't listen to me when I explain that he's washing all of the dishes in their own filth. And then not rinsing to top it off...

But nothing beats the french woman I'm temporarily living with: she uses the dish sponge without soap most of the time, leaves egg stuck in it and will subsequently use said sponge to clean all of the countertops and the fridge - still sans soap. Oui, c'est dégoûtant.
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

Do you rinse your dishes?

Used to.  Went native.  Not anymore.  It's not a battle that is worth fighting to me.

Do your in-laws?

No.  And neither does DH, who does most of the dishes.  (I do rinse the coffee pot - or I did, until the carafe got broken.  :P)

And every time this comes up on here, people come on here & cite all these perfectly sensible reasons why you ought to rinse.  But seriously, if it were that big a deal, an awful lot of really healthy people I know would have been sick or died by now from germs or soap poisoning.  ;)

I find the people-who-don't-get-sick are generally the ones who worry least about things like this.  It's building up your immunities & tolerance to things that you keeps ya upright.  Just sayin'.   ;D

I rinse (in clean water after draining out the dirty water) and then cloth dry. Can't help it-habits from over the years.

The in-laws do not rinse, only cloth dry, and then they get put away into the cupboard.  I try to empty my head of the implications. DH was surprised by this when I told him, but, he rinses and then cloth dries as well.

The co-workers at the nursery don't rinse, only stack them up on the draining board and then cloth dry them.

I've never had a problem with greasy/food chunks on dishes here even though we don't rinse.  In college though, I had a roommate who washed the dishes in a sinkful of cold water for some reason.  My other roommate and I always had to rewash if she ever did dishes  :P

Just for historical purposes this is the discussion from the last time this thread popped up: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=55722.0

Enjoy!

DH rinses and I rinse, so no domestic quibbles.

At the building where I work, however, there is a community kitchen with one of those soap-filled bucket things in the sink.

I always ignore it, soap up whatever I am washing using a sponge or a brush, and then rinse it under running water.

I try to do it when no one's around because I feel like I will be met with disapproval for wasting water or something.

Sharing dirty soapy water with family members is one thing, but with strangers in an office building... Eww.

This!!!!  I even use a washing up bowl now. Once I realised how much easier it is with one, I haven't looked back  :) And I would even care if I had non mixer taps [smiley=curtain.gif]

If I had a dishwasher I'd be uber happy. I don't.  It sucks. Dishes are the bane of my life.So I try and get them done as quick as possible- and that means not rinsing.  Haven't killed myself or made myself ill at all.

Same!  And that's why it's DH's job, so I won't biatch about how he does them, as long as he does them.

I always have to chime in on these threads when they pop up... my friend, who is a food scientist, says not rinsing is NOT a good idea. Even if you can't see them, there are still tiny particles of food in the soap. I swear I don't understand why this isn't obvious to everyone!

Agreed! How disgusting! I just wonder if these people don't rinse off the shampoo and soap in the shower? What about when they wash their face? Do they just let the suds air dry?

Luckily, the (Scottish) bf rinses.

Sorry, nothing personal meant! But, what if this was in a restaurant? And the person before you had some kind of virus/infection and you caught it? People get E Coli from unwashed hands even in cooked food. (There was an incident a year or two ago where the guy making a birthday cake at a supermarket didn't wash his hands and everyone got sick from the cake at the party.) Do you rinse your hands when you wash them or just dry them with soap on? I can't understand why anyone would leave the soap in? What about clothes? Do you just put it in the soapy water and then hang them to dry? I'm pretty sure the answer is "no" to both of those (and the other examples I mentioned), so why would you do it with dishes? Just because you don't get ill from something doesn't mean it's healthy. And I'm not one of those omgineedhandsanitizer all the time people or germaphone. Just prefer not to eat soap and old food.
