York Recommendations
« on: October 07, 2010, 10:43:11 AM »
Hi (I figured this was okay to put in chit chat, but please feel free to move if not!)

My boyfriend and I are going to York for the weekend later this month, and would love any recommendations you guys might have?  restaurants, things to see, etc?  I've looked at the usual websites, but would love any first hand recommendations!

J Baker's Bistro: incredible food! (Plus, excellent used bookstore just down the lane!)

2nd the Minster and the tower (great views). LOVE, love, love York. One of my favourite cities!

The Minster is a must see. If you see an American named Lisa working there, tell her I said hi! York Hog Roast does amazing filled rolls for carnivores. The Black Swan is a lovely pub. Jorvik Viking Centre is a bit cheesy, but kind of fun; however, I've never had to pay as my friend Katie (another American, if you see her say hi from me too!) has worked there for years, so no clue on the cost. Clifford's Tower is good, and a walk along the walls is a must. Have fun!

Does anyone have any hotel recommendations for York?  We've been contemplating a weekend trip there in the next month or two.

Hotel - I recommend Acer's Guest House, 10 min walk from the centre, lovely breakfasts. Great Thai restaurant close by.

I recommend the York Brewery pubs....I always visit at least one whenever I go to York!

I would second the Clifford's Tower recommendation above and the museum across from it is good too. Also take a look at the shambles.

We were recommended http://www.limehouserestaurant-york.co.uk/ by some friends who used to live in York and it was a great choice.

We took our visitors to York a few weeks ago.  My brother uses a cane and can't do all the walking we normally do around York so we rode the open-top bus for an interesting tour.  Really enjoyed the guide's commentary.

York Minster, York Castle Museum (near Clifford's Tower), the Shambles, National Railway Museum (it's free!), so much to see in York.
And a Ghost Walk is fun!  :-)

We did a river tour, but probably not nice in winter.

Ah, York, my favourite city in england.  Actually my favourite city in the world.

I lived there for 3 years as a student.  I met my wife there.  I would move back there in a heartbeat.

Seconding the Minster as a place to go.  Also, wander through the bookshops and such in the Shambles.  There used to be a lovely little Italian restaurant there that did early dinner and a glass of wine for £6.

Cafe/Bistro No 8 on Gillygate is a very good place to eat - just outside the City Walls.  Good for a reasonably priced dinner - great atmosphere.

If you're into veggie wholefood type stuff, there is a really good cafe at the back of the Blake Head bookshop on Micklegate - more of a cheap lunch stop than anything fancy.

York is a good place to get pleasantly lost in.  Enjoy your weekend there!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions.  We had a great weekend, and what a beautiful city!  We walked around for hours.

(and did the other stuff recommended, even the viking thing, which was definitely cheesy but funny.  Although smelled oddly of an animal shelter)
