Due to the silly amount of new accounts created for signature spam, the editing of of the Forum profile fields has been disabled for new accounts and Newcomers. This is becoming a problem and for now the only way to effectively stop it. Thank you for your understanding. :)

Is this why I can't find a way to add an avatar for the USA?

Yes, at this time you cannot change or add an avatar until you've reached 25 posts.

I have installed 2 spam prevention modules today which connect to external blacklists to check ip addresses against databases of know spammers and bots. If this works to prevent the problem spam over the next week, I will restore Newcomers ability to edit their profiles.

This happened to me on the computer at work. I tried to access the site but it came up with a spam message blocking me from accessing the site.
It said due to excessive emails it was marked as a spam ip address. But its not. We send/receive loads of emails daily

I saw the entry in the log. I would recommend you or your IT department check your firm's ip address record on the ProjectHoneypot website and sort it out with them. If you'd like more info, I can send it by PM. It's an issue that should be dealt with if it's incorrect.

I had the same problem this morning when I tried to log on at work. Unfortunately I don't think my IT department will consider me getting on to UKY much of a priority. Is that really the only way to get around this?

If you're getting caught by this, there is a problem with your network computers. You can view the details by searching for your ip address here.
http://www.projecthoneypot.org/search_ip.php

This gives an overview of the reported activity perceived as a threat, a rating, and a sample of the emails sent as spam from the ip address such viagra and phishing emails. This could be the result of a virus or trojan on a computer there, so your network admins should be made aware that your ip address has been blacklisted for this sort of spam. There are also instructions on that page how to get removed from the blacklist. You could do it yourself, but if the spam is reported again, you could get added back. It's important to know what's causing the issue.

IP addresses that have a low risk rating are offered captcha to bypass and prove that you're human. Medium and High Risk threats are not. If you don't get the captcha form on the warning page, your network has had a serious problem.

I don't doubt that we've had problems, considering how large our network is. I just don't think my IT department will look too kindly on my asking about it, seeing as UKY is not exactly a work-related website for me.

I've got the same problem. I work for a huge university/hospital system and there's no way they will even give me the time of day on this sort of thing. :(
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Hopefully they'll be glad you called their attention to the problem and not terribly inquisitive about how you became aware of it.

I'm sure they're already aware of it, given the size of the organization. And I'm guessing they'd want to know why I am bringing it up, unfortunately.  :(

I've had a look and have been able to disable the check for anyone logged in and has made one post.

I believe the instructions for clearing your blacklist status on the page link I gave are fairly simple and don't require an IT department to do it.

Quote
Please note: being listed on these pages does not necessarily mean an IP address, domain name, or any other information is owned by a spammer. For example, it may have been hijacked from its true owner and used by a spammer.

Want to keep this IP address off your website? Start taking advantage of http:BL.

If you are the owner of this IP address, you can whitelist it by connecting to this paged from the IP itself (or from an IP within /24). Alternatively, the IP will be auto excused after 90 days of no activity.

Search for your ip from that ip and it will whitelist you.

Thanks, Leah.  Yes, the whitelist procedure is easy...I was just guessing it won't be much use because the address might get blacklisted again shortly, given the amount of spam that may appear to be originating from the address.
