Expired US License
« on: October 12, 2010, 12:06:02 PM »
Hi,

I have stupidly allowed my US Driver's license (SD) to expire. Now I wanted to open a savings account in the US online but because the license has expired this is proving impossible.

Is there any way to renew or get a new license without having to travel back to the US? I'm still registered to vote in SD and have a mailing address there etc...

Thanks for any advice in advance,

Joe

You might be able to; you need to go to your state's DMV website and see.  Some states will, some won't,l some will but only every other time.

I don't think there are too many SD residents on here.

Yeah I've looked at the state DMV site it says:

"Due to federal and state regulations, as of December 31, 2009, we will not be able to issue renewals/duplicates by mail unless the applicant has been issued a federally compliant drivers license after December 30, 2009."

Urgh. . . Why the banks can't ask for a US Passport number I don't know.

Do any states allow this or are SD just being difficult?

More people have a DL than a Passport but a passport is a federal ID so they should take it. I used to work retail and we always asked for a drivers liscence as proof of ID for the things as needed it, but we'd take a passport. I'd recommend that you call the bank and ask.

You ought to be able to open a bank account without a drivers' license, I'd think. I mean, not everyone has one, right? What about some sort of state-issued identification? Don't some states do those for non-drivers?
