Say something bad about your hotel and you could get throw out.
« on: October 14, 2010, 10:50:34 PM »
I saw this on the Clark Howard show notes today.

A couple posted and said they didn't like the hotel they were in and the owner somehow found out about the posting and he called the police and had them thrown out.

I'll have to remember that and not say anything until I'm clear of a hotel.

Interestingly, nearly 60 percent of on line reviewers said they too "do not recommend" the Golden Beach Hotel in Blackpool, England.
Couple asked to leave hotel after negative TripAdvisor review
Clark has talked in the past about the amazing power of TripAdvisor.

People who post a raving review about a hotel while staying there may come back to their room and find a gift basket or champagne from management. Posting a negative review, on the other hand, can often get the attention of management and some quick resolution to a problem.

Well, here's a completely different side of the coin. USA Today reports that a British couple were almost forcibly removed from their hotel by police after posting a negative review of the accommodations on TripAdvisor.

This particular offending couple

Now, the overwhelming number of people who post on TripAdvisor -- whether with positive or negative comments -- won't trigger such extreme reaction. But Clark thought it was important to share this story anyway.

wow, that's got to be the single dumbest hotel owner I've ever heard of in my life.

"This person left a negative comment about me!  I'd better guarantee massive nationwide negative publicity for my hotel, and fast!"

Maybe they should have waited to post on Trip Advisor until after they stayed there..that is like complaining about the food in a restaraunt and sending it back to the kitchen just to have the chef spit in it..wait till you are gone before you complain

In theatre, my instructor called this the 'two-block rule.' Don't complain or say anything negative about a show while you're still within a two-block radius, unless you're absolutely sure it won't come back you haunt you. You never know who might be listening.

Same thing goes with job interviews too...don't relax or let your guard down until you're completely clear of the building - you don't want to jeopardise your chances of getting the job by making an offhand comment or a silly joke on your way out of the company offices!

I just searched for this hotel on Google - the TripAdvisor page is the second hit.  It is unbelievable to read; every negative comment (even mild ones) has truculent comment from management attached!  I'm not sure if the management may not be in the right though; it looks like people who have never stayed there may be posting negative comments just to make mischief, having read the news story.

The owner's/management's comments are hilarious.   I don't believe him for a moment that the negative ones are fabricated reviews.  Some of the people have posted pictures.  It's always a possibility that a few of the negative ones are made up, especially after the publicity, but the complaints are pretty consistent: filthy, smelly rooms; windows that are filthy and don't open; rooms being advertised as with a view which overlook the bins; crappy beds; bad food; rude service; dated entertainment; poor heating and plumbing; and the practice of refusing to allow people refunds even if they've not spent the night in the room.  I mean, the management even tells one reviewer he shouldn't have stayed there if he didn't like it.  Nice.  Well, maybe if they didn't try to keep the money, they might be able to rent a different hotel room (if there are any vacancies in other hotels).
