One Way vs Round Trip
« on: October 16, 2010, 10:44:01 PM »
Looking to make my first journey over with my spouses visa next month and, incredibly, I have found that one way tickets cost double what the round trip ones do. Would it be okay to book round trip and cancel the return flight once I have landed? Not sure if this would raise an eyebrow with immigration later on, but honestly, it is about $500 cheaper and looking like the better option!

Yep, there's no problem at all with doing this (as long as you travel on the outward ticket and not the return one, because if you don't show up for the outbound flight, they airline will assume you have not travelled and will cancel the return flight) ... in fact, many people buy a round-trip instead of a one-way ticket because it is so much cheaper :)!

If you wanted to, instead of cancelling the return ticket, you could always use it later on for a visit back to the US (either by booking it to return in a few months or changing the ticket closer to the time you want to go back).

Thanks for the reply. Very helpful. Unfortunately as this is my maiden voyage as a UK resident, I probably won't be making it back to the US any time soon.
I see you are from lovely Exeter. My husband went to uni and works in the Exe. I will be in the Exeter-Taunton area once I move.

I'm actually from Bristol originally, but I did go to uni here in Exeter a few years ago (I graduated in 2005) and I just moved back down to Exeter again a few days ago for a new job, starting on Monday :).

Good luck with your move to the UK :) - I know there are a few other members of the forum down here in the southwest too, so maybe it would be nice to arrange a meet-up or something sometime :).

I met Cary Grant in Bristol last year  ;) Saw a show at the Bristol Hippodrome. A nice evening and the city is pretty at night.
Thank you, and good luck with your job, too. I think a meet up sometime would be fantastic.  :)

You can book the return for almost a year out.  I used it to go home for Thanksgiving the first year.

There's a Cary Grant statue in the centre of Bristol (http://www.at-bristol.org.uk/carygrant.html) ;).
