Starting the 3rd year, and finally not alone!
« on: October 18, 2010, 11:42:00 AM »
Hello there everyone!

My name is Laura, and I have now lived in the UK for 2 years, starting on my third year. I attend the University of Nottingham, and I, so far, seem to be the only American on my course and on my campus! The isolation is very difficult to deal with sometimes, although I have made so many great friends while I've been here.

Two new professors recently started at our university, and they are both from the States. I finally got to meet one of them, and he forwarded the link to this site to me. Boy am I glad he did! It is good to see I'm not alone.

I am now engaged to a British national and will be getting married in a few years, who ever would've thought I'd be where I am now!

I am really looking forward to getting to know people on this site. It is very expensive for me to get back home, so I don't go home very often. At the moment it has been over a year since I have been back to the States and seen my family - needless to say I get homesick every now and then and just want to go home!

I am originally from Pennsylvania - any other PA people here?

Thank you for running such a wonderful site, I look forward to being a part of it!

Laura

Hi!  There are about a million PA people on here.  I guess it makes sense, it is a big state.

I am from Allentown, went to PSU, lived in Johnstown and then went to Clarion for grad school.

Wecome!

hello! I'm not from PA, but I am in Notts. I'm slowly finding there are quite a lot of Americans around! If you want to get together for a coffee sometime send me a pm.

Hi, welcome to UKY!

I grew up in Chester Co & Reading area, went to uni in Kutztown, and spent the last few years before moving to the UK living in Philly. Now I live in Hertfordshire.

Its funny you haven't met anyone from PA here, as I have met loads! I live in a small-ish town, and there is someone I went to HS with, two girls that grew up in West Chester, my friends dad who grew up in PA and met his brit wife at PSU, and my husband's aunt's FIL who grew up in Philly. Even my dentist here did a summer abroad in PA!

Three people I went to HS with live elsewhere in the UK, as do two that I went to Uni with. It really is a small world. Welcome!

There are a ton of Americans in the English Dept. at Nottingham-- I know one American organizes a regular poetry reading series and just ran an American poetry conference at the university over the summer.  If you are into poetry/literature at all, it might be worth checking out.

Welcome to UKY  :) I hear year three is the year when you finally get your sea-legs (as it were) and everything magically gets better ;) Well, a girl can dream, right?

You're not the only American on the Uni of Nottingham's campus :)  I'm doing a master's in chemistry and do my work in the Centre for Biomolecular Studies....what are you studying?

Also, I'm not from PA, but I grew up quite close--I lived just on the other side of Philly, in NJ (about 20 mins by train) for the better part of my life..

Welcome to UKY, hopefully it'll be a place where you can deal with your homesickness and figure out which visa you'll have to apply for next.  (Congrats on your engagement!)   :)

Hi & welcome to UKY!   :)

I'm not in Notts, nor am I from PA.  However, I am in nearby Sheffield, and from Ohio.

Welcome!

That's great that you've found some fellow Americans on your campus. DH is a senior lecturer and I've been trying to persuade him to "adopt" some American students for Thanksgiving this year, but he has yet to run into any in his school. I'm sure they're out there.

I'm a native Ohioan, but my husband was born in Pittsburgh.
