Must see in Edinburgh?
« on: October 24, 2010, 09:35:09 PM »
I was brainstorming on where to go for our 1 year Wedding Anniversary...Problem DH has to leave Monday to head up to work (the rig)...So I thought why NOT Scotland and stay there on Sunday instead of having to come home Sunday night (our actual Annv) so he can be ready for work <light blub here>

So if we go up to Edinburgh or anywhere in Scotland we can stay till Monday when he will catch the train North and I would come home south...

Tada so what to do on a Saturday/Sunday night (Nov 27/28th)?

ideas?

I love the Edinburgh astle; the Palace of Holyroodhouse is worth a look, and the Royal Yacht Britannia. You probably need to book in advance but the "Real Mary King Close" is fun, too http://www.realmarykingsclose.com/ Can you tell I like doing the history related tourist things?  ;)

There are lots of hiking trails up and around Arthur's Seat.

Someone just recently booked seats on the Hairy Coo, a for-tips tour of the country side that looks like a blast http://www.thehairycoo.com/

If you have some money to burn, my BF and I were really impressed with the food at The Atrium http://www.atriumrestaurant.co.uk/. On the cheaper side, when we were there in February, the Ramada Jarvis hotel on Princes St was doing an afternoon tea for two for £10 - scones, sandwiches, pastries, and of course tea or coffee. The service was fairly lackluster but it was a lot of good food.

Oh, there's a camera obscura next to the castle!  It's a cute gimmick, and would've been better on a brilliantly sunny day, but it includes a whole museum on optical illusions and magic tricks and stuff that was a lot of fun. http://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/

Is this the kind of stuff you're looking for? I love Edinburgh :)

[smiley=heart.gif] Edinburgh. You don't really need to DO anything, as you are only there for a weekend, so really just walking around the Royal Mile and looking around and then hitting some pubs should be enough. (Also, there's lots of GREAT restaurants and places to shop.) I personally thought the castle was kind of a waste of time and money. I mean, it's nice and all, but there's hardly anything to see inside. I guess it seemed that way to me, since where you and I live, there are many other nicer castles around to see for less money.  ;) One thing I did think was really interesting and fun was the Mary Kings Close Tour where they show you the underground parts of Edinburgh (they literally built the modern city on top of the old one... it's so weird!) and loads of people died of the plague down there. Creepy! Kinda cheesy since a tour guide dresses up and shows you around, but our tour guide had a great dry sense of humour about it, which made it funny. Plus it was cool to just see the old streets underneath. Give it a shot!

Just wanted to add that some of the best views of the city are actually at the Zoo! The Edinburgh Zoo is great... it's small, but really nice to walk around and the animals are mostly in natural-type habitats. Not that you necessarily want to do that on your anniversary weekend, but might be fun to take the girls some time if you go back. DSS loved it.  :)

Oh!  I wanted to add some things here.  Agree with everyone's suggestions so far, btw!  Tour of the underground vaults, just walking around, etc.

When we went to Edinburgh some years back, for a great night out - we went here:

http://www.royal-oak-folk.com/

We'd read about it in the Lonely Planet beforehand & it ended up being really good!  Looks like they are still going strong too.  It's a live folk music pub, and we caught one of the sessions the night we went.  The night we went, it was just a local musicians' jam session - whoever happened to show up.  They invited members of the audience to join in if they wanted, there was singing along & the whole bit.  We had a great time!  :)

One place we wanted to go, but didn't get to when we were there was here:

http://www.rosslynchapel.org.uk/p/visit-the-chapel-I175/

It's a bus ride out of city centre though, we were there at Hogmanay time, and the bus we needed wasn't running over the holiday period we were there.  (Having gone up on the train.)

Can't really remember where we stayed (there's lots of nice B&Bs in the city centre area) or ate.  I remember that DH wanted to eat here:

But I can't remember if we ended up going or not!  :P

We did the whiskey tour/experience, which itself was a little cheesy, but we had lunch at the restaurant there which was actually excellent and I thought reasonably priced, given that we were in a touristy area.

Rosslyn Chapel was amazing. Totally worth the bus ride out there. It's definitely one of the coolest things I have seen since I've lived here, though it's very small, it's so detailed. It's awesome.

Jewlz, that is exactly what I want to do!  Take the train to Edinburgh from Leeds for a 3-day stay and see the sort of things you mentioned.  I've had a look at www.laterooms.com for places to stay.  Now I just need to get DH to take some time off work.
All the suggestions here are very helpful!!
