Spousal Visa
« on: October 29, 2010, 02:45:59 AM »
Hi there everyone! First of all congrats on all the approved visa's and good luck on all the pending ones  ;)

I am a US citizen who has just recently married a UK citizen. We only dated for a short time, 7 months, before we got married. I have plenty of correspondence/photo's to provide proof of relationship/marriage but lack on the knowledge of the requirements my husband needs to provide. Is there a link someone would be kind enough to share or any advice? I am looking for example forms also. I found a site once that had them but I can't seem to remember what it was called.
I also have a 16 yr old son that might be coming with me, can anyone advise on schooling as well? He is a Junior in high school and will be turning 17 in a couple months.

My husband and I love each other very much and can't wait to be together!!! ;D

Thank you in advance !!  :D

Welcome to UKY!

As you are married, your marriage certificate will be the evidence of your relationship.  You could throw in a few photos of you together if it makes you feel better.  Unless you've been separated for a while after your marriage (about 3 months or more), you don't need evidence of correspondence.

Here are some links to guides of supporting documents you will need to start gathering for your visa application:

You apply for your visa online, but you can download an informational application to get a sense of what types of information you'll need when you apply:

How soon do I need to use the visa after the application has been approved?
I can also post date the visa for up to 3 months correct?

Your visa can be post dated up to 3 months from the application date and you will be specifically asked for your date of intended travel and your visa will be made valid from that date.

The visas are issued for 27 months and you essentially have 3 months & 28 days to enter the UK after your 'Valid From' date in order to not have any issued with future visas.

I was reading the current time lines and I can't believe how quickly you can get a visa to the UK. If we were getting one for my husband to come here to the states it would take anywhere from 9-12 months. So happy this route is much shorter....fingers crossed  ;)

Yeah, that's why a lot of UK-Y members here have opted for the UK visa route instead of the US one, even if living in the UK wasn't their first choice... because it's much quicker and easier to get the UK visa!

One more question for the day ;D.... Can anyone tell me how much the fees are for the spousal visa and what about fees for dependants as well?

Thank you everyone !!

Well that's a good question. Right now spousal visa fees are $1031 and for every child that needs a visa the fee is the same. That price is only good through Sunday as on Monday 1 November the fee's will go up and depending on what the exchange rate is this will increase significantly.

ETA: the new fee from 1 November is £750. If the current Consular exchange rate remains the same ($1.60 to £1) then the new fee amount in USD will be $1200.

I teach here (although primary school) and although I don't know if your son would have to complete any additional courses beforehand...students finish school at 16 here and go on to College and then University.

Not sure if anyone else would know what that would mean for him...if he has to somehow do GCSEs or A-levels first to go on to college.
