If you want to take that risk then go for it. Personally, once my application & processed and I attend my ceremony the first thing I will do is send in my British passport application as it's not a risk that I want to take.

It isn't a risk most people want to take.  Unfortunately, sometimes circumstances dictate and people can't wait the 6 weeks needed for a UK passport.  Who knows if it is even a risk?  I can't find anyone who has travelled on the US passport to have had futher problems and have received advice from UKBA that it is ok as well.

Working in those situations, having actual written rules would be very nice.   ;D  Then no one would have to guess.

Exactly! :-) It isn't a risk I WANT to take, but it is a risk I am unfortunately going to have to take, for work-related reasons which came up after I already applied for my citizenship. It will involve one trip and I plan on applying as soon as I get back for my British passport.

I've found several examples on another message board where people got in without any issues, then read that people say it isn't allowed - but it would be so much easier if the laws were concrete one way or the other.

You first, then tell me how it goes.   ;D  ;)

My wife is in a similar predicament -- her citizenship ceremony was today, we have tickets for her and our daughter to accompany me on a 3-month work assignment back in USA on 31 Dec, and we learned that first-time passports take as much as 6 weeks!

I spoke to a nice chap at the Passport Adviceline who said that she can apply for her passport in USA (we should just make sure that we would be there long enough to have it done by their timescales).

Anyone know anything that would contradict what we have been advised?

Many thanks in advance!

Just wanted to update you all. I travelled back to London (Heathrow) yesterday and had no trouble entering the UK on my American passport w/ ILR, even though I am now a British citizen. The immigration officer stamped me in with no trouble.

As my necessary travel is now complete, I will be applying for a British passport this week.

Did you also present your naturalization certificate?

No, I did not. She ran it through with just the American passport and ILR sticker.

I did have the naturalization certificate with me should she have queried my status, but she did not.

I'm also applying for my first UK passport. . . I have passport photos that I used for my citizenship application, which was obviously more than 1 month ago (after the waiting time, ceremony, etc).  The passport application says that my pictures need to be taken within the last month- does anyone know how strict they are on this? I mean, I'm assuming the rule is there so that people don't send in a 10 year old picture or something.  However, I don't want to chance it if they somehow can tell it's the same picture I used for my citizenship application which was made back in November!  I suppose it would be a silly thing to get my application rejected on, so I'll probably just go get another set taken. but then I think I may be reading it too literally. . .

Anyone have any advice/comments?
