I've always thought that the Australian accent sounded like a hybrid between English and Boston (as in paaaahk the caaahh in haaaavaaaahd yaaahd Boston).

Australian's a variation of the Cockney dialect.  Whereas the Boston dialect is more influenced by Italian and Irish immigrants.   ;)

This is very interesting Teletabby!  I swear sometimes the Liverpool accent sounds a bit Philadelphia to me.  Perhaps there's a connection there?

When I first heard the Sheila's Wheels adverts it sounded to me like they were trying to imitate a Brooklyn accent

Lots of people (Jewish & also I think, Irish too) immigrated to the US via Liverpool.

It's possibly, like Mrs R said.  Personally, I think some Irish accents are quite similar to Liverpool, but it could be the influence of the ferries between ports wearing away at each dialect.

It's kind of fun looking at an area's history, and where and how it's dialects came from.  This is easier for places such as North and South America, Australia & NZ and parts of Africa, as they were settled by Europeans...   ;)

With the UK it's a bit more difficult, but at the same time kind of simple, as you have the Celtic influences, as well as the Normans, Saxons and Romans.  It's fun coming across proper Yorkshiremen (and women) who still speak a mix of Modern and Middle-English. ("Get thee home to thy mother!)

I agree.  I do think there may be a direct Liverpool--Philadelphia connection as Philadelphia was a major port and Liverpool ferries probably went directly there (as well as NYC and other places).

I've noticed! Especially the Fishtown-area accent is a bit Irish.
ex: the letter I in words sounds more like "oi"
I used to live in Fishtown and would hear of people getting into "fioghts" at "nioght" :)

And also the "o" like in hoagie (good choice of word for an example, huh?  ;) ) sounds to me a bit like the "o" in a posh Irish accent.

I'm here (in Kent, specifically) visiting my BF and just went into a Boots to try to find a plug adapter for my computer.  I'm a native New Jerseyan who has spent a lot of time in NYC.  I don't really have a stereotypical NJ accent, it's a pretty standard American one, with perhaps some regional influence.  The man who helped me thought I was Northern Irish!  That's definitely new.

Since I had a 'scouse' accent at one time and now when I listen to it on the radio I think it is influence by the large amount of Irish immigrants.
