US laptop to UK as a gift--fees?
« on: November 16, 2010, 08:53:12 PM »
My dad is coming to visit just after Christmas.  If he brings a brand new laptop that is a gift for me, will he have to pay any import fees?  I have heard that bringing electronics across borders can cause trouble sometimes, but if it is just one unit and is a present, would that be a problem?

D brought back two ipod touches and a laptop from the States last time and wasn't required to pay anything.  He did have a laptop nicked in New York at JFK when his bags went through security, so you may have your dad put the laptop in his carry-on just for safety sake.  I have also come into the UK with new electronics (nothing over $1000) and never been questioned.  I am not an expert though.

Thanks, Sarah, that helps!

Does anyone know if Macs have that power converter thingy on their cord so that they can work on 110-240 volts?  I know Windows computers do, but I've decided to convert, and am not sure if Macs have the same thing?

I bought my Macbook Pro in January and it's worked fine here, both on its own power cord (with a plug adapter) and on a UK-style cord I bought here.

As far as I'm aware, all laptops should have a 100-240 volts capability because the whole point of them is that they can be used anywhere in the world. You'd just need a UK plug adapter (or a UK Mac power cord) to be able to plug it into the wall.

If you look at the Macbook specs, for example, on the Apple website, it says that the line voltage is 100V to 240V AC (under Electrical and operating requirements): http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html

Historyenne- it's also the same plug for a macbook, it just has a slidey out thingy to use a UK plug.  I know that was articulate as all get out, but it's about 15 quid for the slidey thing and you won't need to use an adaptor.

Thanks everyone, it sounds like we're good to go.  I'm even pretty sure I know what you mean by slidey out thingy ;)
