May be getting a UK tax refund?! YAY!!!!
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:13:47 PM »
I decided yesterday on my day off to see if my tax code was correct on my pay statements.  While I was doing that I got out last year's P60 to use on the HMRC tax calculator.  Much to my surprise and total excitement I may be eligible for a refund!!!

Last year April 2009 to April 2010, I only worked from December to April (as I had just started work then).  Because the amount for those 4 months was less than the UK minimum to owe tax I may be able to get it all back!!!

I just wanted to put this out there because there's many of us that move and only work for a portion of our first year.  So hopefully my little revelation might help out some other newbies.

Are you sure it hasn't already been refunded?  I worked from July to December 2009, and my extra tax was automatically refunded in my first check of 2010.  Something to consider :).

Oh, I will look into it but I'm pretty sure I would've remembered an extra 500 quid.... LOL. But good point.  Time to dig up the pay slips.....

It is not often as simple as that because - assuming you are not claiming the remittance basis - you need to report worldwide income in figuring your UK tax - i.e. including income earned in the US (unless non-UK income for the entire UK tax year is less than £2,000).

I called HMRC recently regarding my tax code from my first year here (Dec-March). I was informed the tax code was already changed during that year and refund incorporated automatically. Same this year when my tax code changed again.

I know my tax code is correct, and for the 2009-2010 tax year I only had £500 in income tax from the UK and a refund from the US.

This will be the first year that I've worked a full year in the UK.

It's great when that happens, isn't it? :). I was on the wrong tax code for almost a year back in 2005/06 and when I called the tax office about it, they changed it and I received a cheque for £1,500 about 4 weeks later... and then I had tax credit put on my pay cheques every month for the rest of the year instead of tax being taken off :P!

See thats what I'm hoping for...a nice big cheque through the post...
The government may be able to make loads off us immigrants through visa fees...but not through overpayment of taxes! :)

I just got £350 back from 09/10. It is definitely worth calling if you suspect your tax code has changed.

I was just thinking about this recently, and discovered that I might be eligible for a refund as well.

I last had a paying job in 2006 (a short-term thing, related to my field of study).  I didn't even think about taxes on that until my husband mentioned something about it the other night.  According to my records, I paid about 500 pounds in tax, but since my total income in both countries for that year was something like 3,000 pounds (and I haven't had a job since!) I definitely should have had a refund.

Apparently the limitation on these things is 5 years and 10 months from the end of the fiscal year in which the overpayment was, so I've still got time to inquire about it.  It sure would be nice to have that chunk of change--it would knock out one of my small debts, which would be fantastic!
