Hello from California
« on: November 27, 2010, 02:01:39 AM »
Hi,

I have been offered a job in London with my current company.  We are from Southern California.  I am married with 3 kids.  I am flying over to London on Sunday to "check" things out.  We have never lived outside California so if we go this will be a big change for us.  I go from excited to freaking out...hahaha.

Anyhow we just found this site and it has been great reading through a lot of posts.

Just wanted to say hi.  :)

Eric

Hi!
San Diego girl here! I'm up in Manchester, but it's nice to see more SoCal people making the move over the pond!
Let us know if you have any questions!

Hi!

I am from San Diego too, currently living in Didsbury, Manchester. I have been here for two years now. The hardest part about living in the UK is missing friends and family and not having a descent Mexican place to eat at.  :)

Ha! Yes, I'm in Victoria Park, and while I love Curry Mile, I desperately miss my Chilli Relleno Burritos. Sigh.
I have heard rumours of a decent Mexican place in York. I will let everyone know. :)

If it's Fiesta Mehicana, I've been & so have some other folks around about here.  It was nice - as good as you're probably going to get around here.  As compared to what you'd get in the US...well...  Better than Las Iguanas, so that's progress!  :)

I remember the drinks being good - if a bit pricey.

Can't remember when we went there - it was sometime in the past year or so.  Persephone might remember & could possibly offer further comment, since she's in York and has probably been more than once.

That's it! I do just want to try it as I love York anyway, so any excuse to go, really.

It's definitely worth a go & especially if you're going to be in York anyway!  I hesitate to recommend something unqualified, because my experience is that everyone's Mexican food expectations & standards tend to vary so widely.  ;)

When I moved here, everyone told me to try barburrito. I was very dissapointed.

I will definitely have to give Fiesta Mehicana a try. Thanks for the recommendation.

Yes!  I have been there but not lately because my dh doesn't like Mexican food (a lifelong IA I feel).  It's pretty good, but it can be difficult to get into sometimes if you don't have a reservation, especially on a weekend.  I'd agree that in the US it'd would be pretty average Mexican food, but if you've been here with no US Mexican food for say, oh 2 years, it's fabulous!   ;D  The drinks are a bit expensive and the margaritas don't have crushed ice but are just the margarita mixings over ice.  It is or at least used to be run by either a family or a group of people actually from Mexico, but I think they just altered stuff for British tastes but changed it slightly differently than they would for American tastes (if that makes some sense).  I hope you enjoy it while you are here.  :)  Oh and it's nearish Clifford's tower and the Castle Museum, well between them and Coney Street (the high street), just an fyi if you are wandering York looking for it at some point.  :)
