Hanukkah Food and Recipe Help
« on: November 29, 2010, 06:18:43 PM »
My sister married a Jewish guy, so she's now incorporating Hanukkah traditions along with Christmas traditions for their kids. I think its lovely- she's got a new Menorah and some dreidels for the kids, as well as some gelt, to give as her little presents.

That said, since we didn't grow up Jewish, she's doesn't really know what's traditional (not that her husband or his family are very traditional at all, but...) so with that in mind, she's needing help with organising food - (and any other family traditions) -

Things I can think of are
Potato pancakes
Brisket
Rugelach

But what are your favourite recipes and family traditions?

Thanks for your help!!! :)

If she is having a Chanukah party, the most important part is something fried, in the states we usually do latkes, but here people seem to get Donuts (I for one am getting my Krispy Kremes this week!)

From my own experience, there isn't much thats traditional for Chanukah, but my mother was the queen of the Roast Chicken for Shabbat dinner!! Along with something like a Potatonik, or a noodle kugel (mmmmmm) some veggies maybe...and I for pudding, well, we were too fat growing up so we didn't have pudding (issues much??) but we always seemed to have dried fruit around the house, Jews love dried fruit! But you can't beat a good Babka!

Here is a (stolen) list of what you could do...
latkes
apple sauce
cinnamon
brisket
kasha varnishkas
carrots and apricots
salad
broccoli
soup
desserts
fruit
apple cake
almond cake
babka
gelt

mmmmmmmmmm, kasha varnishkas. I might have to make some tomorrow now! Good luck to her!

I don't think I saw kugel on that list--so kugel!  And gelt (in case you don't know pb) is money!  It's traditional to give money to the kids at Chanukah time--either real money or those gold foil covered chocolate coins.  Don't forget to spin the dreidl and sing the Chanukah songs both "Dreidl, dreidl, dreidl, I made it out of clay....." and the Adam Sandler Chanukah song!

Thank you- that's really great!! I'll pass all these along to her - she's excited to create new festivities in her house  :)
