The ones that really get to me are the diet coke "impulsive moments" ads. The girl in the park sticks the guy's ball up her sweater, the window dressers go "boo"....

They are criminally lame and I can't stand them in a really, visceral, where is the remote, I can't watch this for one more second, panic-y kind of a way!     [smiley=sick.gif]

I watch ITVplayer and ITVbe a lot and those commercials begin and end every ad break. Urgh.

I don't think I've ever seen these!  From your description, though, pretty sure I would hate them.

Really? I like it simply because it's a bit wacky and it's definitely catering to my generation. haha. My brother loved He-Man.

It must be a generation thing, because I don't get it either.  I don't know who He-Man is, nor do I know who Skeletor is.  But at least those stupid 'strutters and builders' aren't on anymore!  I seriously hated those.

They do make me cringe when I watch them. I remember seeing the one with the ball and being like "How did the guys not see her pick the ball up and put it there?! How are they that dumb!"

Haha I don't know but I'm no longer it for sure!  ;D

(But I did have he-man/skeletor growing up so not sure if it's necessarily an age difference thing)

Well, according to Wiki He-Man was first introduced as an action figure in 1976, then became a TV cartoon in 1983, with a live-action movie in 1987 and a toy line in 1990 :).

I wasn't into He-Man growing up but my brother and his friends watched it and had some of the toys.

I think it helped that I had two siblings 10+ years older than me and I grew up with a boy as my best friend haha

Even if it had been really popular when I was a kid I wouldn't have seen it, as I wasn't allowed to watch TV.  I had VHS tapes of films and some TV shows, but my parents didn't want me to see commercials.  So it wouldn't be a generational thing for sure.

I had to look up that advert.
But, I was definitely a He-Man, She-Ra, Masters of the Universe cartoon watcher as a kid. I remember having a Glimmer action figurine and a Crystal Moonbeam toy. My sister had She-Ra and Mermista and the Crystal Castle.  We may have had others as well.  The babysitter's place had the He-Man toys and Greyskull and we loved playing all of them.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

My sister made my nephew an AMAZING (at least for a non-professional) Castle Grey Skull cake for his 5th (??  think) birthday! It was seriously SO excellent!

What do you think about this now that you are grown up ? Was it worth it?  Did it make any difference to your attitude to consumerism?

I think it was a solid choice on their part.

The cons:
-left out of popular culture as a child and teenager
-can barely tolerate watching commercials as an adult

The pros:
-I was never a kid who asked for a lot because I wasn't aware of a lot of products marketed to kids
-I spent my whole childhood reading and running around
-I wasn't exposed to anything too frightening or sexual before I was ready
-I am rarely bored because I learned to entertain myself at a young age

I don't know if I'd be the same person as an adult if I had been allowed to watch a lot of TV as a kid.  I think overall it's a good choice and that it positively impacted my life.  When I was 13 my mom and I watched one series of American Idol so I would have ANYTHING to talk about with the girls at my new school, where I was a transfer.  I remember wishing I knew what other kids were talking about (I usually only had a vague idea from seeing it at other kids' houses) but I guess that's not a very big deal.

As for consumerism...I definitely do like to shop (mostly for clothes or books), but I am not an impulse buyer.  I'm careful with money and I spend time thinking over purchases and planning them out.  Also I don't have any reservations about buying, like, supermarket brand things if they're comparable to a name brand.  There's only one brand of clothes that I'm very loyal to but they don't operate here, and I used to work there so it's different than seeing it advertised and wanting it.
