What do you think about this now that you are grown up ? Was it worth it? Did it make any difference to your attitude to consumerism?
I think it was a solid choice on their part.
The cons:
-left out of popular culture as a child and teenager
-can barely tolerate watching commercials as an adult
The pros:
-I was never a kid who asked for a lot because I wasn't aware of a lot of products marketed to kids
-I spent my whole childhood reading and running around
-I wasn't exposed to anything too frightening or sexual before I was ready
-I am rarely bored because I learned to entertain myself at a young age
I don't know if I'd be the same person as an adult if I had been allowed to watch a lot of TV as a kid. I think overall it's a good choice and that it positively impacted my life. When I was 13 my mom and I watched one series of American Idol so I would have ANYTHING to talk about with the girls at my new school, where I was a transfer. I remember wishing I knew what other kids were talking about (I usually only had a vague idea from seeing it at other kids' houses) but I guess that's not a very big deal.
As for consumerism...I definitely do like to shop (mostly for clothes or books), but I am not an impulse buyer. I'm careful with money and I spend time thinking over purchases and planning them out. Also I don't have any reservations about buying, like, supermarket brand things if they're comparable to a name brand. There's only one brand of clothes that I'm very loyal to but they don't operate here, and I used to work there so it's different than seeing it advertised and wanting it.
