The pain is more on my outer foot and the ball of my foot and not my heel or toes. It sounds like plantars fasciitis mainly affects the heel.

*Has it been getting steadily worse?
*Does it hurt like hell if you step on a rock (or something similar)?
*Does it kind of hurt more right after you finish a walk.....but then gets a bit better?

Stress fracture? I've had one myself.....but back when I was running a lot.

Ok, I give.....what the heck is parkin?

Parkin is a ginger, oats and treacle cake. It's left to sit for a few days after baking and it goes moist and sticky. It's a common treat around Bonfire Night (5 November).

I'm not sure if I'd says it's gotten steadily worse. Some days are worse than others and it had been worse recently compared with a month ago (at least from what I can remember).

It doesn't hurt when I step on a rock, but since it's been hurting, I have been walking more cautiously so I don't step funny and twist my ankle or something.

It usually hurts more when I've been walking more, but not always right away when I stop. It might start hurting an hour or two after I stop walking or if I stop for a rest. Prior to a week ago, I'd kind of take it easy if it was hurting (like crossing my legs with the injured food on top rather than on the bottom and shifting my weight to my good foot when cooking or doing dishes), but the last week I've been elevating most of the day it if it hurt that day or the day before.

When I remember this starting, DH and I were on holiday in Germany and doing a lot of walking/hiking but I don't remember hurting it or stepping funny on any walks. About a week before we left, DH dropped a 400ml bottle of water on my foot (landed on the top of my foot, not my toes). I hope that's not the cause, but it's the only unusual thing I can think of!

I don't know if you have low or high arches, but the wrong shoe supports + lots of walking over time can lead to a lot of problems including possible stress fractures. An x-ray is a good idea w/ a podiatrist (they usually have you stand in different positions to check for stress fractures & pronation). I have a million feet problems, have to wear special shoes and custom inserts or they're completely unbearable and swollen through the arch. Rest, ice & compression are pretty much the basics to do until you can see someone though. It makes me happy to hear you can sometimes self refer to podiatrists, I'll need one pretty quickly after moving!

Hey Rick... do you know if the train station in Inverness has luggage storage lockers? I'll have about 4 hours to kill before our train leaves for Edinburgh on Tuesday and the wains and I want to walk around unencumbered by luggage.

It looks like they do. Look under passenger services.  :)

Is that the "left luggage" because I don't speak British yet and to me "left luggage" is something that sounds lost.

Yes. As opposed to 'lost property'. :)

I believe they do, but if you need to you can just leave them with me at the car park office which is right by the train and bus station. 😀

I know I've got slightly wide feet but I'm not sure how my arches compare to most people.

Yesterday was better, but it began hurting in the evening and I woke up this morning with it hurting almost like before, even though I hardly used it yesterday. DH noticed the inside of my foot was a bit swollen last night, where my heel meets the arch on the inside of my foot.

I've got the same sensible shoes (the nurse at the walk-in clinic said so) as usual and I don't wear anything other than trainers. I haven't gotten new shoes in about a year and nothing else has really changed unless there was something on that holiday end of Sept that I can't remember. I remember it hurt in the evenings there and sometimes when we took a break on a hike, but I can't remember exactly when it started hurting.

Just a few more days until my GP appointment so I'll tough it out until then.

Ouch! Hope you get it sorted TravelingFrog. Foot pain is nothing to mess with, especially since it's hard to avoid staying off them and letting them rest.

My inconvenient annoyance is that I just had the most amazing Scottish holiday and am now suffering from post-vacation blues! :-P Finding it so hard to get motivated today...

Thanks.

The best way to curb post-vacation blues is to start planning the next adventure. ;)
