hahahhaha!  I see what I did.  You said "It's a 2 day trip home", and I read "home" as back to your family home kind of thing.  And I really could not fathom that!  Yeah, your timeline is much more reasonable!  I could do the length of trip you're actually doing.
Yep... this is home. North Carolina is back home.  Lmfao. Subtle difference.

My oldest daughter will be over for a week at the end of June, first week of July to see Roger Waters in concert.  Then we are renting a car and traveling the Hebrides.

Youngest daughter and her girlfriend will be meeting us in Amsterdam in August.

And my son won't be over as he is saving for an apartment and wedding.

haha I read it the same way too.

We do do crazy things for family though. My sister paid an average air fare price (not even an amazing deal) just to come see me for a long weekend. She had a fair amount of gin and missed me so booked the ticket. She only could stay a weekend because she couldn't take her husband/kids so could only afford to come briefly. I will say it just wasn't nearly enough time! We only hung out and that was okay with her because she said she only wanted to come to see me but it was still a lot of stress logistically and with the jet lag to only get to hang out for like 2 full days!

It was.  Luckily my husband was able to get the heating working a bit (it's not at full whack but we are at least able to get the house to 16C now).  And this morning my shower wouldn't turn on!  Ugh, when it rains, it pours!

I also read Tami's post that she was going for 2 days!  lol!  Tami, it's you - not us.   ;D ;D ;D

I did do a crazy short trip for my grandmother's funeral a few years ago.  Flew on Friday, so all day, landed in the afternoon. Funeral was on Saturday and flew back on Sunday.  I'm very glad I went though.  It was grueling.  Flew back on a flight with an entire marching band!  They were SOOOO excited.

Oh goodness :( if that isn't fixed quickly I can guarantee we have plenty of hot water if you need a shower. I'm glad he fixed the heating enough to get it a bit warmer! When my furnace broke I was relying on space heaters and doing all the baking every morning.

BTW - your recommendation of the fresh baked GF bread at Sainsbury's was a good one. I don't seem to be allergic to it. Yay! Now if only I could find regular crackers (I don't like the nairns oatcakes, they break too easily and taste weird, and I'm allergic to Schar.)

Oh man, it must be anxiety inducing trying that kind of stuff for the first time though! So much respect to you on that! Do you have to just start with trying a tiny bit?

The thing I'm allergic to in the GF products (and meds, sauces, coconut milk, and almost everything processed) here is used in tiny amounts, so I usually try a slice and see. I basically break out in hives but have never had anaphylaxis yet so I just keep benadryl and my epi pen handy just in case. The itchiness is overwhelming and the more reactions I have the more severe they get, so I really struggled at first. Doing all my shopping and cooking and finding safe things makes it a lot easier. (ie - there's one safe canned coconut milk, two safe non dairy milks in cartons etc) My husband is learning and it's getting better.

I rebooked my flight for Friday ahead of the inevitable cancellation. I'm lucky to have gotten the next flight since my flight was almost completely full and they do one flight from Edinburgh to Newark a day.

One day less with my kids but I feel ok about that. Better to be safe... My father in law was going to drive me and he's a bit of a nervous driver.

Hey Tami, I dug up a picture of my grandmother's house in Wake Forest, sorry for the quality :

It's on the corner of North Main and North St, I think.

Have you tried making your own oatcakes? I made a batch of black pepper and cheddar oatcakes yesterday. I'd planned to bring them in to work, but with the snow, I'll happily sit at home eating them all.

Let me know if you'd like the recipe and I can post it later. It's super easy and very tasty.

I hadn't tried an oatcake before coming here! Share away :)

Crackers are so fiddly that I found the effort to make them always exceeded the cost to buy them and there were many readily available versions in the store. Here, they include the ingredient I'm allergic to in all their GF crackers available in Sainsbury's so I'm gonna have to try my hand at my own.

Thanks to both of you! I went back inside for the first time in 30 Years and couldn't believe how tiny it was.  I had this memory of giant banisters and now they hardly came up to my thighs.  It was pretty freaky.
My grandfather operated on a guy who had been in a knife fight by candlelight on the back porch.  The operation was on the back porch, not the knife fight.
