It is hard to see the mesh on top of the walls so have posted a pic of the corner.  The mesh is attached by metal brackets which angle in.  The cats would have to get on top of the wall and then go backwards, upside down, then over the top of the mesh.  And the mesh is flexible and they don't like it underfoot as they wouldn't feel stable.

What they do is get up on top of the wall, with the mesh over their heads, and watch my neighbours when they are in their gardens.  At first one would patrol the walls as if he were Steve McQueen in the Great Escape, just making sure that there had been no breach in the perimeter.  Now they don't bother.  We have had no escapees so far (except when hubby was first here and managed to let one out of the back door).

If you keep a cat indoors exclusively it soon adapts and settles down.

I couldn't cope with having 7 of them indoors all the time so this was a good option.

I just don't understand the mentality... would you let your dog out to play in traffic? No! So why would you expect your cat to survive a feline vs auto situation?

The difference in life expectancy is staggering!

Quote
Cats who are kept indoors can reach the ripe old age of 17 or more years, whereas outdoor cats live an average of just two to five years.

ahhhhhhh I couldn't notice it in the other photos but I see now. Does the netting also keep other animals (obv barring birds) out of your garden?

That's an ideal solution.  :)

My cat misses us dearly when we are gone, she runs around the house crying when either of us heads to work, but I'd say she's generally happy as an indoor cat. I wish we had a friend for her, but our landlord said one cat only.

My IA today is just pain. It's been really bad lately from a new injury, and I'm not getting much help for it (I think it's just muscle spasms in my back that are severe and not being touched by the lightweight muscle relaxers I have). I'm going to have to work on my day off because I've had to take so many breaks to lay down on a heating pad today.

Yes, no cats out and no cats in.

Foxes are in the area, apparently, but I haven't seen any.  If any fox wants to impersonate Tom Cruise to get in our garden - good luck to him.

I wouldn't mind a few hedgehogs to help clear up the slugs though. But they can't get in either.

Honestly they are cute but a massive nuisance most times (and they leave gross poo behind that attracts my dog like a madwoman).

Yeah.

I had an outdoor cat when I was a kid. We moved, and he became an indoor cat. Lived to a ripe old age and was as happy as could be. And not the potential prey for truck or car wheels, coyotes, or large birds of prey. He did not foul the neighbors' property, become flea-infested, or get ticks.

Since then I've had several cats. All were kept completely indoors - except for the time I was able to build a fenced catio on the balcony.

I used to volunteer with a no-kill cat shelter. One of our requirements was that the cats be kept indoors, perpetually. I listened to some very heated discussions between the staff and people wanting cats.... And then there were the people who would not spay or neuter their cats. We never let one go out of the shelter intact, but were inundated every year with people who had a mama cat with several kittens and they couldn't keep them. Literally, the nursery exploded with kittens every spring. If they're not going to fix the cat, at least they could keep it inside.

It's like talking to a wall, though.

I had two cats as a kid. One you could not get outside the other you could not keep inside. I wish we could keep her inside she’s had many scuffles through the years but definitely couldn’t have changed her.

Do people here not believe in turning your thumping music down and bringing your party inside once it starts getting late? We have a little wooded area that separates our street from the next. People over there ALWAYS have thumping music playing outside late. I can usually here it in our back bedroom- the further point in our house from it. We’ve learned to live with it, because there’s nothing else to do ( we’ve reported it).

But last night my direct neighbours were going at it. Super loud music, chants/cheers/singalongs. Now I don’t know my neighbours per say but I like them ( we have a respect he takes our wheely bin out and we bring his in etc). I just wanted them to be quiet. I feel so old writing this haha. But I had to close the windows just to quiet it a bit.

Since they don’t do it ALLL the time I tried not to get annoyed but I just don’t get the thoughtlessness around here when it comes to playing loud music late at night.
