Is Marmite as tasty as Vegamite?
« on: December 07, 2010, 08:25:51 PM »
I lived in Australia for 4 months, and might be one of the few Americans who walked away with a taste for Vegamite. It's perfect on toast. and completes a breakfast. I have never tried marmite- I'm told it's similar. Which do you prefer?

I have to admit that I've never tried either on their own, but I use Marmite in my beef gravy.  It gives it a heartier taste, I think.  I got the idea from my husband who said that his mom used to do that.  IMO, it makes it taste much better.

I've never had Vegemite, but Marmite on a hot buttered crumpet is my idea of heaven.  :)

It's salty slime, but actually quite good

They are similar, however Marmite has a stronger/more intense flavour. I personally don't like either, but growing up my siblings loved Vegemite and hated Marmite - my brother said the flavour of Marmite was too strong. You however may love both!

Yeah, it took me a bit to get used to the difference in taste but now I like Marmite (like not love, I guess I am the exception that proves the rule). I loved Vegemite the first time I tried it.

I tasted Marmite once. It tasted like poison. I had to spit it out.

Hiya

Sweetpeach - How do you know what Poison tastes like?!

A thin layer of marmite on some hot lightly buttered toast! Yes Please!

But as their recent (and current?) marketing advert goes..

You either love it or you hate it!!

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

This is key. Marmite is meant to be eaten very sparingly. The Marmite:butter ratio is crucial! If you put too much on, then it's no wonder you don't like it!

Lovely :)! I usually wait until the toast is cool enough that the butter doesn't melt and then put the Marmite on... that way you get a creamy Marmite/butter mix :).

It is crucial that you only use a small amount of Marmite though (just a little on the end of a knife for a whole slice of bread - spread like this) - my dad doesn't eat Marmite, but he once made toast for me and smothered the bread in a whole thick layer of the stuff... it was gross  :-X!!

Totally.

One can only guess marmite is like poison by the way one's body violently rejected it.
