I'm in Hampshire and would love to meet up with other Americans. I tried calling a few meet up clubs like Canadians and Americans in Southern England and the International Woment's Club of Southern England, but they are either inactive or folded over.  It is upsetting since I'm in the country and can't travel to London or the outskirts easily. I'd LOVE to meet other Americans near Winchester, Southampton, Salisbury area--I'm even thinking of starting a meet up or something but don't know where to begin! I think I'm very friendly and I have a British hubby, we are both about 30 without kids and would like to meet like minded people who enjoy good company, country walks, nice meals, traveling, etc.

Hiya

It's great that you want to meetup with people and 'usually' there are plenty of meets and gatherings organised - I've even been along to a few!

Realistically, and I stick my neck out slightly for saying this, there's many people who are tightening their belts and crossing out uncessary spend at the moment. A 'few' meetups perhaps over a 4-8 week period to attend will cost X amount and I 'suspect' some potential meet goer's are cutting that out and using those funds to pay for more basic essentials - all of which are rising in price/costs. Add in the fact everyone's freezing, travel is currently a joke in the UK, people are gearing up for the circus that is called Christmas, you can sort of see why perhaps meetups are a little thin on the ground!

that 'gloomier' side of things aside, I think you'll find enthusiasm isn't dampened to want to get a meet or gathering going, but I think there are a few members from UKY who do arrange them every so often. Have a look in the meets section for anything being organised in or around the London area, and I'm sure there'll be something somewhere!

Worst comes to the worst, get down to the Sports Cafe on some Baseball/Gridiron game night - I'm sure you'll find some people from across the pond there :)

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Why not try the Southampton group on meetup.com.  Do you have to meet up with Americans only?

Snap!

I was just about to suggest meetup.com.

Or you could start a thread here and see if anyone's interested. I'm not sure who's in your area, but you never know!  :)

I'd like to make British friends too but I find it helpful to meet other expats that can share the same experiences--this proved invaluable when we were living in Oz for 2 years.  I'm sure once I get settled into ft work I will meet more people but it is hard being in the country. I've scoured meetup groups in the area and there really aren't many choices. I think that the reason the American  meetups aren't active here is because there aren't many Americans around or if they are, they've already made their friends so there is no reason to meet up with the purpose of making friends, all valid reasons and explained to me by the people that once headed these clubs.  I love British people but making friends from home makes home seem not so far away.

HELLO & WELCOME!
I didn't even know there were such clubs or meet up groups.  I have looked on 'Meet Up' and there is nothing in my area at all.  I am in Plymouth, down southwest.  I have met couple other Americans that live close by.  First one I met was a lady from here/UKY that actually lives only a few blocks down the street from me.  How amazing that was.  Thanks to her, I have met only couple others, but we would love to have a group/club/meet up, as I would love to meet more americans from our area.

Anyone near me?  (other than those few I know LOL) Plymouth area?

If your ever in my area, please let me know, and we can definitely meet up.

Nemie

I'm in Winchester, too, if there's anything going on! :-)
There are two kinds of people.  People who say what they want, and people who DO what they want. Which one will you be?

I live in a village a few miles outside of Southampton. Maybe we could arrange to meet for coffee (or tea!). Feel free to send me a message.

Hi I'm a new member but not American but joined in the hope of some help with a charity event I am running. It's an Autumn (Fall) festival in Southampton, Hampshire  the Jubilee Sailing Trust Autumn Pumpkin Festival and Scarecrow Avenue and I'm looking for a group of Americans to show us how to make Pumpkin pies for sale at our charity festival on Sat 8th October. It will be bound to attract a lot of attention  and we could try for a press release in Daily Echo surrounded by pumpkin pies before the event to advertise it which may even encourage some new members for your fledgling group. You can have a stand free of charge at the festival which attracts over 7,500 visitors including BBC tv for the last three years. You'd need a 3mx3m gazebo, your own tables and loads of pumpkin pies both sweet and savoury. The charity would like a percentage of sales after your ingredients expenses are taken off. In case other pumpkin pie makers are reading this then get in touch via the festival website newcomer link: http://www.jst.hampshire.org.uk [nonactive] and help make pies even travel down to Hampshire for the day to help sell them and support this possible new group that this lady is thinking of setting up. How about that for a suggestion. Jennifer might offer to help to as she lives near Southampton.  Our visitors will want recipes and info on everything pumpkin and by the way we have the uk champion at 1504lbs! regards Sonja ps we are hoping to set a record for the most scarecrows in a field  rivalling Hoschton Georgia set that record with 5,441 after Ohio's record of over 3,110 was beaten so start making scarecrows too.Every one helps to make a spectacular Scarecrow Avenue.
