Cheapest (least expensive) airline to fly from Boston to England
« on: December 09, 2010, 10:06:05 PM »
I've always paid too much for my flights- There seem to be a few Bostonians here- can you recommend the least expensive airline-and best time to travel to go from Boston to England? I actually want to go to Liverpool, so am not sure if I can get there by direct flight, or if John lennon airport is only acessable by a transfer flight or train from Heathrow.

You see, from a young age I have suffered from an acute case of Beatlemania, and have heard only time spent in Liverpool will calm my senses. I'd rather explore Liverpool and points further north than see London. My Ringoitus is quite extreme.

You need to talk to Gottagettolondon. I'm not sure she'll have any flight advice for you, but the two of you can engage in some lively Beatle-talk!

There are no direct flights into Liverpool that I'm aware of.
Best bet is fly into Manchester which is about 20 miles away. You can confirm my estimate of mileage by using google.

Boston direct flights are only to Dublin (Shannon as well I think certain times of the year) or Heathrow airports (or Paris or Amsterdam). Believe me, I've looked at all options from everywhere.

Cheapest going is almost always American Airlines.  But I think their flights are crap. Their food sucks, they have no good in flight entertainment, rude flight attendants, you have to pay for drinks, etc.  But if you don't mind and you just care about the price, they're almost always the cheapest.

Flying from Chicago, Aer Lingus is usually the cheapest.  I know they have just as many flights from Boston, so they'd be worth checking out.

I agree that American Airlines are rubbish having flown them twice.  I just flew US airways on this trip and I really liked them but that was in and out of Philly.

I also think you should try flying into Manchester and then training it down to Liverpool.  But, for cheapest, try some of the cheap flight sites and keep your eye on tickets.

DO NOT fly Aer Lingus...they always stop in Dublin which means that you will be actively evading UK Immigration Control -- a VERY BAD THING.

I’ve had a change of heart about American. I always thought they were rubbish but the last three times I went home (NY) for a visit I flew American because the flights were about £80-£100 cheaper than either Virgin, which I usually fly, or BA. Plus the flight times for American from Heathrow were much more convenient.

Beside the price and schedule, what American has that the other airlines do not is the widest seats and most legroom, at least on the 777s. It was the first time in coach that my knees did not touch the seat in front of my and I’m not a tall. It was surprisingly comfortable.

Yes American’s food is crap and they don’t offer as many movie options as Virgin or BA, though for me the flight attendant’s banter, gossiping about the passengers in front of the passengers, was way more entertaining than any second- or third-run movie.

Agreed.  Holy crap is the Boston-London route sucktastic -- from start to finish.  But it's cheap and it's usually cheap at the last minute, too, which has been a HUGE plus a few times when my husband didn't know if he could travel with me until a few days before.  If I'm flying solo, I almost exclusively fly American.  I can deal with the ancient, sh!tty planes with no seatback movies for the short flight.  When it's a "homeleave" flight covered by the company, we generally fly Virgin.  The big downside to Virgin to/from Boston is that there's only 1 flight a day and it's 3 a day with AA/BA and I love the day flight vs red eye.

Nope, you can't get they-ah from he-yah. You pretty much have to fly to London. Used to be flights from Logan to Prestwick (Scotland) but don't think they do that anymore. We pretty much fly American or Virgin but there's not a lot in it. You just have to keep looking for deals.

I would vote Air Canada as the cheapest, so long as you don't mind a reasonable layover in Toronto or Montreal. Canada has the lowest airport taxes around.

Air Canada planes are comfortable and the service is excellent.

Nope, you definitely can't get to Scotland directly from Boston.

Hubby and I are flying Icelandair to London (not direct, though) which was the cheapest we could find for the holiday season.  Check out Kayak.com.  They always seem to find the best deals and then you are directed to the website which shows the best deal (ie - the airline, orbitz, travelocity, etc).  I usually don't use anything else.

Also, LOVE the Beatles!  On one trip to Birmingham, a friend and I went on the Magical Mystery Tour bus tour through Liverpool (it's painted like the actual bus from the movie, too  :D).  Check them out: http://www.cavernclub.org/mystery_tour.php or http://www.beatlestour.org/.  Per the website, it's 14.95GBP for an hour and 45 minute tour.  I remember it being a LOT of fun.  Also, there is a Beatles museum (The Beatles Story) near Duke's Dock.

AA sucks.

I'm flying KLM for the first time this holiday season, so I'm hoping the Dutch treat me right.  I do hear that the booze is free, though.

Agree.. I wish I could .. Always have to have a layover somewhere between Edinburgh and Boston.
I usually take KLM or Virgin or Continental. Unfortunately as phatbeetle said NOTHING goes direct from anywhere in Scotland to Boston. MORES THE PITY.. would make life soo much easier and shorter flight times too lol
