California soon-to-be Derbyshire girl!
« on: December 13, 2010, 10:16:49 PM »
Hi all!  My name is Kelly, and my husband and I are moving (with our two little girls) to England this May.  My husband is born and raised in Deryshire, and we are looking to move there or to the Nottingham area.  We've been living in San Diego for the past 4 years, so this should be quite the transition!  I'm excited to have found this site and get to know fellow Americans.  Any tips and tricks you can send me to help adjust to our new life would be greatly appreciated!   :)

Welcome Fellow Californian!  ;D  Moving with kids can be tough- My 7 year old had a few rough days at school but now loves his new friends.  Plus, the weather will be a huge change for you coming from San Diego- I was Northern Cali, and I happen to love the rain and fog.  I might advise to bring a favorite food product you think you might not be able to get here, might help the transition go a little more smoothly.  Good Luck!
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

Hello and welcome!!  Best of luck with your move!

There are lots of good threads on here.  Have a look around and hopefully some of the threads will give you an idea of what the adjustment has been like for others.  There's a great thread about good things in the UK (I think it's called I need to hear good things about the UK or something like that) which might help you see what you are gaining by moving here.

Welcome 'neighbor'. I'm currently in LA/South Bay and headed to Nottingham area next Spring. I'm sure it'll be hard to leave Diego, but just think how much you'll enjoy visiting.  ;)

After just "enjoying" the snow while on holiday in the East Midlands one word of advice: make sure the kids have winter gear! If they're anything like my nephews in SD they barely own sweatshirts.

Thanks for the warm welcome!  The suggestions have been great.  My husband I poured over the entry on things to love in the UK (thanks persephone!)....it made him so homesick and me so excited!

And thanks for the tip alilbabba, our daughters are definitely going to have a makeover to their wardrobe!  Considering we've had a heat wave this week and our 3 year old has been going to preschool in sundresses and sandals!!  So looking forward to seasons and introducing our girls to snowmen, falling leaves, and new flowers in the spring!

Alilbabba - good luck with your move!  Maybe we'll be 'neighbors' again!

Pengi-thanks for the offer!  I'm curious about the neighborhoods around nottingham.  We have two small girls (3 years and 3 months old), so I want to move into an area that has good parks, good schools, easy walking to public transportation....any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!

Hi & welcome to UKY!

I'm in S. Yorks, but live near Worksop (Bassetlaw District).  :)  We live right along the Doncaster to Lincoln train route.  Worksop has a fantastic park just near the library (they've just redone both in the past two years) if you ever get out that way, it's worth stopping at. :)

Hi! Former San Diegan here. If you like Mexican food, I'd eat as much as possible, because it might be a while until you're able to find some again. That may be because I live up in the North, but, yeah, definite lack of. Summers are pretty nice here, I actually regretted giving my flip flops up to the charity shop near my house. Layering your clothes is the key here. Welcome, and hope to talk to you more! :D

Abbygirl - you speak the truth and yet I'm in denial about giving up my flip flops :(

mgwife: Not sure how close to city center you want to be. But if you're looking for peace and quiet with bus access (granted not as frequent as in the city) Calverton north of the city is a nice and growing place. Sure there's still a blue collar element as its a former coal mining village. But its very easy to get into Nottingham. Great school system or private catholic if that's the route you want to go. Ping me if you want to know more.

alilbabba-thanks for the tip on Calverton!  It's led me to a few wonderful little areas north of the city, and we like to the look of them all!  My husband grew up in a coal mining village, so he would feel quite at home.  I'll let you know if we have any other questions. :)
