Pancake/Waffle Syrup
« on: December 20, 2010, 04:32:38 PM »
My kids love waffles. Any suggestions for a syrup similar to Hungry Jack or Aunt Jemima's? True maple syrup won't cut it for these kids. They want the thick corn syrup maple syrup.

Tate and Lyle's make a maple flavoured syrup.  That might work.

Most maple syrup here is the real thing.

The closest you will probably get to Aunt Jemima (or the "fake" maple syrup) is Lyle's Maple Flavour Golden Syrup.  I haven't seen it in years though, so I'm not sure who stocks it or where you'd find it.

They might just like plain old golden syrup.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

If you go with teh Tate and Lyle, get the sqeezy bottle, the little cans are messy.

I also recommend the Tate & Lyle's Maple flavuored Golden Syrup.

You may also like Aldi's "American" pancake syurp.  It's lovely, thick and gloopy.

I was just in Costco today and they had big ol' containers of pancake and waffle syrup for just about £4ish.  Probably the best value.  It also lists corn syrup as one of the main ingredients.

Agreed.  It taste sooooo good...and I haven't found any 'British' equivalent.  I also get my American premade (just add milk) pancake mix from Aldi.  It's yum for those of us who are useless at making them homemade (I always over/under beat the batter and end up with yuck).

Thanks for the replies. I bought some golden syrup and the kids didn't go for it. We were in St. Johns Wood the other day and popped into Panzer's. They had Aunt Jemima! ...and I spent about £5 on it! I told the kids they better use it sparingly and make it last. No more drowning the waffles! That's the first and last time I spend nearly $8 on a bottle of syrup. :P

You might want to try the maple flavored Tate and Lyle's. It's much cheaper than imported stuff and your kids may like it better than plain golden syrup. With Shrove Tuesday coming up in a month, you should find it pretty easy in the shops. Some shops stock it with ice cream toppings. One thing I've learned about living over here...you'll never find something in what seems like the obvious location. You have to think outside the box!  ::)

Thanks Bmore, I'll have to pick some of that up.

It's funny to think of Aunt Jemima as imported.   [smiley=laugh4.gif]

If you get desperate again, Ocado carries Aunt Jemima syrup, too.  I've also seen it in Selfridges.  All at the same price point as Panzers, though.
