Washing Machine will not Drain
« on: December 27, 2010, 06:50:46 PM »
Topic says it all really.  It will do everything else but spin and drain.  Does this mean I have to buy a new washing machine?  We are debating on calling a repair-person to come out as not sure if it will be worth it or not?  Any thoughts on what the problem might be?

Ours had this problem, but it was because a sock got sucked into the drain.  We had an access panel and after running it a few times, it pushed through all of the sock.  We had to open the access panel and pull the sock out of the drain a few times, and drain it manually through that way, but it worked.  Could this be your problem?  Could it have eaten something?

As pphone stated it may be something in the drain. As stated there will be a panel - usually located in the back - the hardest part to reach - and a cleanout thingy. It may be in the front if you have been leading a good life.

My guess tho are the brushes....the are probablly worn. A repairman will fix it in 10 minutes and bugger you over the charge....expect 40 - 60 quid.

If you are at all handy they can be changed very easily using the internets as a guide. A bit tricky the first time but the brushes only cost about £4. And it makes you feel manly too.

This is what they look like on most models. They are made of some carbon type substance and they wear down. There is a steel band in them that makes a grating noise (most of the time) when they are getting down to teh point where they need changing (like brake pads). Pop one out and look at the carbon and if they are worn down and a little bit of metal is showing you will know.

Google your washing machine model and 'changing brushes' and you will find out a whole lot.

Here they are on the motor (your model may be a bit different, but you can't miss the motor....round thing).

This might be silly, but are you trying the same load of laundry over and over again, in hopes of getting it to work?  Ours did the same thing, and it turns out that the mix of the particular load of laundry created an imbalance and it stopped at the same point every time.  Once I switched up the load, it worked fine.

You've probably tried this, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

 :)

Ours did this 2 weeks ago and it was because the filter had junk in it.  We took the filter off and found 5 different coins, 3 hairpins, 2 screws and 3 nails (all from the previous house owners).   :o

We just emptied that out and then it worked perfectly.  I took all the clothes out first to make sure it wasn't an imbalance.  The drum was still spinning fine so I knew there was no problems with the belt.

This is the most common problem when washers won't drain (we looked online to find this out).  Usually there is an access panel on the front of the washer and the filter will be located behind that.  It usually unscrews.  Takes about 5 minutes and it's free...I'd definitely try this remedy first.

Same here, the drain was plugged and we had to open up the front panel to empty it out.  Had to do it a few times before the problem was fixed but, eventually, the washer was back to normal.

Thank you everyone for your assistance especially sonofasailor for your pictures.  We tried everything but it dead.  Considering we have had it for ages and had no issues it was a great washer for for all those years.  We spent all morning working on it but I think the motor gave up in the end.  I am just glad it did it while the sales are on and before the vat went up.

Again thank you for all your suggestions.

Sorry it's dead.  I hope you find one that will last just as long and be just as good in the sales!

Sonofasailor thank you for the suggestion but we already gave it to a "rag and bone" man.  They collect scrap and sell it on it is all about the recycling.

Persephone, thank you for the well wishes.  We bought this in the sell.  So far I love it. Got it for £ 189.00 down from £349.99.

H and neighbour put it in and I am catching up on laundry as I type!

Thank you everyone for your assistance.

We forget how important something like a washer is. I went a month washing clothes in teh bathtub, I had this technique where I would stomp them like grapes. Wringing them out is no fun, nor "ironing something dry". And they never really feel clean.

I love doing laundry because it is just about the only multi-tasking I am capable of.

I kind of like it! It looks like it would do a really great job of warming me up in the garden in Autumn. Alternatively, it could just be a fire hazard in a strong wind...
