Purchasing tickets for someone else
« on: January 03, 2011, 09:05:23 PM »
So my folks are buying us tickets out to see them but I have no idea what the best way to go about buying them is.  Should I just get them to give me their credit card details, should they just get me the money somehow (i don't have a us bank anymore) or should I just go to a travel agent and let them figure out the best way to pay.

Any advice / experience would be appreciated.

Thank you!

My kind dad often purchases tickets for us. He just goes online and purchases them himself and puts them in our names. If they aren't comfortable going online they might want to go to a travel agent.

The last time I booked a flight, my mum gave me her credit card details. I found that to be a bit easier than having her book my flight because she wouldn't know how difficult it is to make a 6am flight out of Heathrow on a Sunday when the Tube is down. ::)

I've booked a flight for my bf on my card (international flight), for my brother on my parents'/grandparents' credit cards (domestic flight) and for myself on my parents' cards (both domestic & international) and it's never been a problem.  Just either get their cc numbers or send them the flight info (number, airline, times, etc) that work for you and let them do it on their end with your information.

My df (since around 1pm today!) has bought me plane tickets and it hasn't been a problem at all.  Some cc and airline companies do flag airline tickets bought with names different than the cc name.  This happened to me.  It was all very weird, but I had bought a plane ticket for myself on travelocity and then went to use the same cc card the next day, it had been halted.  Turns out that somehow during my transaction someone got the number and booked some pretty incredible trips for themselves.   I've also run into problems with my old work cc card.  About half the time I booked a flight for a coworker it would get bounced.  The fix just requires a quick call to the cc company or the airline to figure out who stopped the charge.

thanks. My mom is going to just give me her cc number. Should I have her call the cc company first to make sure it can handle international charges since I'll be doing national express as well? I don't think my folks have ever bought anything from outside the us so it would probably appear as unusual activity.

I've booked DH's flights on a number of occasions, especially with £:$ being the way it has been. I've been booking through Delta, no problems at all, I just enter his name under the passenger details. I'm a bit miffed that the airmiles go to him not me though, lol.

My credit card couldn't be used by somebody else on Delta's site because it's registered for online validation, which means I get prompted for a password before my cc is accepted. Check with your mom that hers isn't the same.

Loads of people travel on tickets booked on somebody else's cc, so I wouldn't worry about it.
