Always cold when indoors
« on: January 08, 2011, 02:07:16 PM »
It seems like people don't keep homes/office buildings here as warm as I was used to in the US. I tend to be cold whenever I'm in someone else's house.  I was at  a New Year's party and wearing short sleeves  (part of a costume) and the host had to give me her cardigan because I was shivering (there were other sleeveless people who seem fine).

In my office in the winter, I often have to work with my coat on all day, even with the radiator turned on all day. It's a tiny office, with just 3 desks, so it shouldn't be hard to heat up. The central thermostat of the building must be turned down too low for my comfort. Nobody else in the building is walking around with coats on (unless they are coming in or going out) or complaining about the cold, so it must just be me.

Sometimes I have to keep my coat on at the pub (once again, the only one).

Our heater at home is knackered (goes on for a little bit, but doesn't stay on) and I asked DH if we could get a little electric heater just so I could warm up until it was fixed and he said that was silly, I should just put goves on.

It's not a matter of coming from a warmer climate. I'm from New York City and used to colder winters than we have here in York. I'm just not used to being cold indoors.

I recently had my thyroid levels tested and they came out normal, so it's not that.

I experience the same thing, sweetpeach.  I'm from Philly and used to the same kind of winters you are.  I've learned that in the winter I just can't wear cute short-sleeved tops and have to wear thick stuff and layers plus a scarf.  Everyone else is out in the pubs and restaurants with strappy tops on and I don't understand why they are not cold.

We have one friend who leaves her windows open all year round and wears sandals and tank tops.

My mother in law is the opposite though.  She is very thoughtful and makes sure the heat is on big-time when we visit, but she does go overboard and I end up roasting!

Were your thyroid levels even close to being low? Also did they just check your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) or did they check your free T4 levels as well?

I am always cold.  I am known as a member of the reptile people by my friends here, because I always have a coat on in the winter inside and out.  The tease me because I'm from Iowa where snow comes in feet and windchills are abundant and yet, I cannot get warm in any building here during the winter.  Consequently, I have a closet full of sweaters.

Maybe the dampness makes you all feel the cold more?  We keep our flat quite chilly on purpose to save on heating costs, but I just bundle up in blankets and deal.  On the other hand, my MIL kept her house like an oven, and when I lived with her I hated how hot it was, especially in the bedrooms!

I have more sweaters now than I ever have in my life.  I live in a fleece when I'm at  home.  But I always feel dumpy and dowdy!  No cute strappy tops or t-shirt material stuff for me until summer.  Or what passes as summer here.

They checked my free T4 and TSH but wouldn't tell me levels, only that they were in the normal range. I had them checked because my brother was recently diagnosed with hypothyroid on the basis of a routine blood test (no symptoms) and put on Synthroid. My sister was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 10 years ago. She has a goitre but her thyroid levels always test normal and she doesn't take medication.

I always feel dumpy and dowdy, too.

The reason I asked is that I also have a familial history of hypothyroidism and have recently been put on meds but I had to fight for it since I was only borderline. The endocrinologist had me monitor my basal temps (first thing in the am) and mine ranged from 96.2- 97.6. No wonder I was always cold!

I think it's odd they did not give you your results as you have a right to that info. The "normal" range for TSH that the UK stands by is ancient, and it's the only western country that does not recognise the newer research. Can you push for your results?

I think this harkens back to the olden days (lol) when people didn't have central heating at all, so many people are of the "put another jumper on" philosophy. I am one who is always warm, so I really can't stand the cold people in the office, sometimes in the summer they have space heaters under their desks! Unreal!

I hope you can stay warm!! :D

I'm the same, drives me mad, it contributed to me absolutely hating my PA at the bank, she sat opposite and had a space heater on her feet 24/7 all year around. It was so boiling under there! A colossal waste of energy.
Also cold people in offices can put more jumpers on, but hot people are generally stuffed and just have to suffer being hot.

I must admit i'm one of those "put a coat on" then people, I wont turn the heating on unless it's arctic inside.

I am just like you sweetpeach..I am from Philly and the cold never bothered me back home..we were just back in the states for Christmas and my parents house and every where we went seemed to be warm. The cold didn't seem to bother me there. But back here in the UK we live in Brixham and we are by the sea. I think the problem for me where I can't get warm here is the damp cold. I find when it is damp and cold it goes right through me and I can't warm up. I have to layer up when I am out and about and in my house. I have brought back 3 fleece blankets from the states and they now reside on my bed and couch. I wouldn't think that living somewhere where the weather was warmer then the states that I would be so cold. I really think the difference is in the states it is a dry cold and here in the UK it is the damp

I agree. Also, I think people in the UK are more conscious of the cost of heating fuel. At least, the people I know are. And I've become that way too since coming back here. I put on the central heating for an hour or so during the day, and maybe an hour before bed to take the chill off the bedroom a bit, but that's it. I am cold, though! Nearly always! But I just bundle up, move about a bit more and make the best of it.

I think that's true about people here think more about fuel costs.  When we were in the States, my parents just seemed to take the price of heating the house as the price of doing business, and I was like your pay HOW MUCH during the winter????

I do think the damp cold cuts you though.  I mean, I've been out in -50F windchills before and yeah, it is cold, but I feel better in it than I do in the -10C we had here in December.
