American style Dryer - recommendations?
« on: January 11, 2011, 12:42:32 AM »
Hi everyone,

I am looking to buy a clothes dryer, as I already have a washer.  Can anyone recommend a good make/model that will dry a full load of laundry in 20 minutes like American models?  Many thanks for your help

cheers

Hi there

I have had a dryer since I have lived here 13+ years and have yet to find one...and I use mine ALOT and have gone thru several dryers.

Saying that I think I saw in B&Q American washing machine so maybe there is one about...

The one I  have at the moment is very good and reliable..it's a Hotpoint Aquarious 6 kilo..

I'm pretty sure they don't exist here!  I have a tumble dryer (with an external condenser added on) and if I put a VERY small amount of clothes in (as in, half a UK size load - i.e. about 1/4 of a "regular" American size load) then my clothes will be mostly dried within 45 minutes.  Of course it takes 4 loads (so a few hours) to dry the equivalent of one American load!  From my understanding (talking to the small number of people I know who have a dryer in the UK), 45 minutes is pretty standard for that amount of clothes...and I'm talking like 2-3 shirts, a pair of kids pjs and a few socks.

I've got a White Knight tumble dryer (http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=10737509&fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories%3C{9372014}/categories%3C{9372034}/categories%3C{9372164}/specificationsProductType=freestanding_washers___dryers/specificationsSpecificProductType=tumble_dryers&tmcampid=4&tmad=c&ecamp=cse_go&CAWELAID=449043810) that I bought from Argos a couple of years ago (stick the hose out the window), and it will dry a full washing load from our washing machine in about 45-60 minutes (the lower number if it's all shirts and stuff, the higher one if we've got jeans or thicker clothes) on the high heat setting.

We have a dryer that took 90+ minutes to dry a load.  I always thought it was because it was a condenser dryer.  Then we got a new washing machine that has a 1400 rpm spin cycle.  WOW!  that makes a huge difference.  Most loads (not towels) are dried in less than an hour.

I know this is not a direct answer to the original post...but I thought it might be a point of interest if you are looking at new washers and dryers.

It is not American style (never seen any to be honest), but I have a Zanussi vented tumble dryer.  It takes longer than I remember my dryer in the States taking-but not what I consider an inappropriate amount of time.
I second the recommendation for a high spin speed washer.  My washer (also an Zanussi) has a 1600 spin setting.

I have a cheapo White Knight intergrated one in my kitchen, its vented and I have had it for 3 years, it can dry a big (that fits in my bosch waster) load in about 60 minutes. Its cheap, but efficient.

We've got a fairly new Hotpoint condenser dryer and while it takes a bit longer than a US dryer, it's not ages -- a full washer-sized load of whites or non-denim darks are done in around an hour.  And if I decrease the amount of clothing in there, it's even quicker.  Most of the time, I just dump the full load from the washer into the dryer and call it good.  None of my dryers back in the US would dry a full load in 20 minutes, so I may have had lower expectations to start.  But after a completely useless washer/dryer combo (aka the steamer/wrinkler), I am THRILLED with our dryer.

Yeah, I'm in the US and have never had a dryer that would dry the size loads I do in under 50 minutes.

In the UK we bought a used dryer and it would easily do a full UK load in 60 min or less. Can't recall the brand anymore but at 50gbp or so (can't recall exactly what we paid), it rocked!

I have a Hotpoint Aquarius tumble dryer as well. (we vent it out an open window) I can get a big load of towels or jeans done in an hour on the lower heat setting. Lighter loads can be dried in 40-50 minutes.

However, I won't buy Hotpoint/Indesit (same manufacturer) ever again because of a bad experience with a dishwasher that conked out at 14 months old. I have an extended warranty on it and a repairman came out and had to order some parts before he could fix it. Over a month later, we're still waiting on the parts. The customer service is horrible as every time we call, we get a different story. It's a shame for them because we need to replace our washing machine soon and I know which brand I won't be buying. But having said that, we haven't had any issues with our tumble dryer, knock on wood.

Hiya

Some places to start your searches and finding out about what's available :)

http://www.ogormans.co.uk/american1.htm

http://www.unitedshades.co.uk/

http://www.affinityappliances.com/american-refrigerators.php

http://www.carmichaelbrowns.co.uk/american_appliances.asp

http://www.kappco.co.uk/products.php?catid=7

Some of those which show only Fridges, you could potentially call and ask if they'd include or can import a US appliance over with their next order.

cheers and happy washing and drying !

Costco sell a US style dryer (Im thinking its a whirlpool or samsung) but theyre not cheap. If we ever move home, we're going to make sure the next house has space for a laundry room to fit US sized washer/dryers.

Are all air vented, like in the us.

Ah Yes, the useless combo (steamer-wrinkler) is exactly what I have.   ;)

Does anyone actually *use* the "dryer" on theirs? I must put the word dryer in quotes, as it seems an oxymoron to state otherwise ;)
In a way, it's almost anti-green if it's just wasting electricity rolling around accomplishing nothing  ::)

I use mine (in fact its going right now) and it works pretty well and better than having clothes hanging about drying everywhere.. I prefer the warmer weather when we can line dry though...The machine has a 30 min wash cycle and in good weather I can get about 4-5 loads of laundry done in so many hours.

We bought ours after having one in a flat and not thinking a dryer would fit in the house (after almost 4 years here now, figured a small one can get into our cellar via the window) and its been good. Our only issue is that the trap is inaccessible unless your a washing machine repair person. The trap is hidden at the back of the machine and needs a special tool to unlock the casing around it. (Thanks Hotpoint!)

Other than that, pretty happy with our machine
