emergency passports
« on: January 14, 2011, 06:15:54 PM »
Has anyone had to get an emergency passport? I have my appointment for registering my son's birth and getting his first passport on Weds. I got an email this afternoon reminding me and saying that if we have plans to travel within 4 weeks we can apply for an emergency passport. Now I booked our tickets for just under 4 weeks from the appointment, based ob the previous advice that processing times was 3 weeks.

Will we need to apply for a normal passport at the same time? We can't really afford to have to do both anemergency and a normal one at the moment.

Also, would I need another appointment for the emergency passport or will they just process it when I Have the one for reporting his birth?

Thanks in advance.

We got our DD's passport 7 days after applying for it at the Embassy when we registered her birth...I believe others are having similar experiences. I don't see why you would need an emergency passport.

My concern is that because of the changes in processing the reports they will delay issuing his passport until that is done.

I'm probably over stressing. I just hate stuff like this.

Unless it's different for child passports, you get a "free" full validity passport with your emergency passport if you apply for it within one year after the emergency passport is issued. I lost a paddler in south Korea in 2008 and had to get an emergency passport but my ten year one was issued by mail for no additional cost within a year.  So go ahead and get the emergency one and then apply for the full one after your initial travel is over.

Just an update on this, we did end up having to get an emergency passport for the upcoming trip.  We were told at our appointment on the 19th that the processing of the Report of Birth was suspended and therefore passport were not being issued, however because we qualified for one we could get an emergency one.  We leave in just over a week and I have still not received notice that my son's full validity passport has been issued so it is a good thing we went ahead and got it!

Glad to hear it worked out.  Did it cost you extra, Pengi?

Also, obviously I shouldn't post on my iPod because really,
I lost a paddler in south Korea in 2008
*face palm.*  Just noticed that now.

Nope, nothing more expect for the ridiculously high price for the courier to deliver it once it arrives.
