interview is tomorrow, sorry short notice, but....
« on: August 26, 2004, 05:47:57 PM »
ok, here's the scoop, sorry this is such short notice, but it being early in the evening, maybe someone can pleeeeaaaaasssseeeee give me a clue....
the interviewing company is asking me if I have something proving that i am eligible to work in the UK...i was under the assumption, after talking with the woman at the british consulate, when applying for my visa, that....my spousal visa would be enough information to suffice as proof that I am able to work immediately?
Am I wrong? Is there something else i need to get/do?
My interview in tomorrow morning at half 8, if i DO need something else, should I aske the people i am interviewing with if there's a way I can delay on that pertinent info just a bit, and still retain employment, simply because I've just arrived less than a week ago in the UK, and have literally had NO TIME to work out all the details for working??
I am most likely blabbering on now and not making sense...so, if you can make sense of this, and have any info you can give me, please please please, feel free to do so :)
thanks much,
hugs; Abby

I thought you were just supposed to show your passport.

I thought so as well, but when i was talking with the woman from human resources and scheduling the appointment, she asked me if i had proof of my eligibility and i said "well yes, I have my UK spousal visa in my passport" and she didn't know what to say to that, she had suggested I had a letter from somewhere (which I couldn't understand because of her accent being british mixed with some chinese I believe) supporting my ability to work.......strangely enough, the consulate never mentioned my needing anything more than my visa/passport....so i am basically clueless!!  ???

Your passport isn't proof that you can work though. When I got my job they wanted to see my actual visa, so just show that to them. For extra reassurance, they might like to see the letter from the Home Office that comes along with it saying (basically) "your'e free to work now".

Id your visa an FLR? THey should have given you a letter at the time you got your visa, stating what the visa is good for. That's the letter they'd probably like to see.

But still, even if you don't have it - your visa should be proof enough. Bring it, show it to them, if they don't think that's proof enough then have them call the HOme Office, because it is. :)  ::)

Oh, and I'm rolling my eyes at them, not you. ;)

Hello ... in the UK, an employer can be in trouble if he doesn't check that a new employee is eligible to work and - I think it was about 4 years ago - a 16 page A4 booklet was sent around showing all the various passport stamps (Visas) that are and aren't acceptable as proof of elegibility.   Now ... I'm an employer in a very small way and - somewhere - I had a copy but I can't lay my hands straight on it; perhaps the person you spoke to doesn't know of this booklet, or perhaps they've mislaid it too.  I know I checked it when we took on a South African employee.

Your passport with Visa should be enough as it won't be stamped with the "no work / no recourse to public funds" wording on your latest entry, and that's legally what they need.  However - a cautious employer may be asking to see the a more positive "you can work" letter; I'm not sure what's handed out in terms of such letters and when these days, but they are just intended as a confirmation for you. The Visa should be enough.

I got my spousal visa in Oct of 2003 and I wasn't given any sort of letter.  All I got was a lovely visa stuck in my passport!

When I started working, my employers wanted a copy of my visa (and the front pages of my passport).  Maybe it'd help if you printed out the parts of the IND website where it says you can work on a spousal visa?

Really though, I'm sure they've had someone work for them who was working on a visa...there should be someone in HR or Payroll who will know that a spousal visa is enough to work...

Good luck!

No letter with Settlement Visas issued in the US - you get a letter if you apply for FLR in the UK.

there were two hours spent on the interview, with a full tour of the plant in which I've applied to work with. I won't know if I got the job or not until the lady that interviewed me comes back from holidays at the end of next week, beginning of the following week. And as far as what they need, I hadn't gotten that far yet :(
will report more when the time coems, hugs and thanks for the support :)
