So where am I THIS week?
« on: August 26, 2004, 06:51:52 PM »

"A minority Elizabethans foresaw global warming in 500 years time and put up buildings on stilts to prepare them for the coming of the floods in the next millenium".

Anyone know where this is?

OK ... this one's a bit tricky.   It's a place with a LOT of double letters in its name (and I mean a lot).  [Graham wonder to himself if some clever internet searches might help you with that clue, or if perhaps there's any clue at all in the image name ...]

It looks kind of familiar - somewhere in the Cotswolds? or are you playing a trick on us and it's actually in some far flung corner like Japan or Mircronesia??

Actually I have found it on Google but I won't say as that is kind of cheating and someone else might get it.

Well, for double letters, how about:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll Llantysiliogogogoch

But I doubt it's Graham's location, tho.  BTW, don't try to pronounce it, you might sprain your tongue.

It's ....

drum rolls ... cymbals sound ....

Wootton Bassett, in Wiltshire.

About 5 miles to the west of Swindon, which creeps closer year by year.  Wootton Bassett is now largely a dormitary town, but has an appealing old High Street in which the most interesting and obvious building is the 17th Century Town Hall see in my picture.

Some 25 years ago, when I moved to Wiltshire, I nearly bought a house in WB.  An old wreck of a place in a back street opposite the church, we got a survery done on the place which was notable in that the ONLY thing it found to say was in good condition was the staircase.   As I recall, the bay windows were built on poor foundations and falling away from the house, and the workshop to the rear was in such imminent danger of falling onto the public footpath that we were adivsed to have workmen standing by to demolish it the moment we completed and became legally responsible for it.   Funnily enough, we lowered our offer as a result of this report and the owner was disinclined to let us have the house at our new top figure ....

Lovely town, though.

Which begs the question...is that house still standing?
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)

OK - Lisa - when I first read that I thought you were asking about the house on stilts and I did a "DUHHH - I photographed it last week".   But then I realised you were asking a far more sensible question about the house just round the back that I wrote about.

Yes, the house around the back that I nearly bought is still standing.

I had an expert survey done on the place (always a good idea, especially with older properties) at the cost of a few hundred pounds even in those days - a few hundred spent early on can save thousands in the long term.  And I wrote off that money as once we had to lower our offer and the purchase fell through.  Sort of insurance premium .... when I got a phone call our of the blue from a Squadron Leader at RAF Lyneham.

"I was given your name by [names surveryor company]" he says "I understand you had a survey doing and I'm interested in buying the property too - I wondered if I can get hold of a copy ....".  Long and short of it, he got his copy, I got half the money back (in an exchange of envelopes at Swindon station!), and I was impressed that the place had gone to someone who was willing to going to have the "nowse" to get things done.

I walked past the place a good few years later; Typical old house on a typical street just off the centre.   Yes, it had been fixed-up and was good for the next 50 years.
