Considering moving back the US after 9 years in the UK
« on: January 26, 2011, 03:16:32 PM »
Hello!
I was hoping for some advice from you all. Im 22 and I'm graduating Uni this summer. I move to the uk when I was around 12/13 and at first I hated it. Although I've gotten used to it now, I've been waiting to be done with school to move back again. I have 2 older brothers who still live in the US and my younger sister decided to move back about 4 years ago and I miss them a lot! With it just being my parents and I living here I feel pretty segregated from the rest of the family. I have duel citizenship because my dad english so I guess I have the luxury of being able to move back and forth as I wish.

The main things holding me back from moving me back are that I'm not really sure I know what its like to live in the states anymore, I visit every year but a vacation to see family is a far cry from living there. And as much as I miss my siblings and extended family I could only see moving back if my parents came too, and I worry that because they're approaching retirement age that the US wont be as good for them as the UK as far as healthcare is concerned, and they have told me that they dont feel like they have another career move in them. On top of this I'm living with my partner of 4 years who is english, so I guess I either ask him to move out there too? which I'd feel bad about as he would be leaving behind his own brother and parents, and I know from experience how hard moving to a whole new country and culture away from your family can be.

So I guess I'm asking for your thoughts and views, and also any information you guys have of what retirement looks like in the US now. thanks!

I sympathize with your dilemma, although I'm from the "older" generation. Married to a UK citizen and lived there over 20 years. Came back to US with my son (dual) who was then 14, a bit younger than you. He'd been back and forth to visit grandparents so it wasn't completely strange but he found the adjustment to school difficult (although he did quite well in the end) It was hard because his dad and sister were in the UK still.
DH and I are now in that age group where the NHS is looking good so I plan to go back when I retire next year, but I don't know about my son (now 30)
I think if you asked him he would say it was a bad idea to come back to US -- but what do you do when families are already split up?
