US citizen living in UK, married FLRM Visa, tax help!

I need some major help! I am a US citizen, my husband is a UK citizen and we are married living in London. When I file my tax return for the state of Illinois, where I spent January 2010 to August 2010 working, do I file as married filing separately?

One last thing, is there any specific tax information I should know before filing as living in the UK but still being a US citizen?

Hello,

The answer to your question is: yes, you can file as married filing separately both at the federal and state level if your husband is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Although you will probably be exempt from filing state taxes in the future years, you will continue to file federal tax return while living abroad and filing UK taxes.

I always think that the best place to start looking for helpful tax information for those in the UK is the IRS London Embassy which is full of up to date free tax information:
