USC family visiting
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:06:59 PM »
Okay little back story and could you some help. My mom has been through a lot ( long term recovery from cancer ) and seems a bit lost on her future. She asked to visit for a couple of months (2) and sort of re-discover, travel and finally meet my in-laws.

I had a question about what she would need healthwise as far as travel insurance. Because she has very sensitive digestion due to the past, if goodness forbid she turn ill, would she beable to go to my GP. Any advice?

Yes, I think she can register as a temporary patient at your GP (as long as that's okay with the GP), but she will have to pay for visits and any medication she may need.

If she takes out travel insurance in the US before she comes to the UK, I would assume that she could then claim back the costs of treatment later on (obviously depending on the terms of the insurance policy though).

She would be able to go to the GP, she would just have to pay for any care she receives, unless she has insurance that will cover it.  Personally, I'd say that if there's a good chance she'll need care, she should get a good comprehensive insurance policy from the US.  A lot of basic travel insurance policies don't cover treatment for pre-existing conditions.

Neither will Medicare or any state Medicaid.

Thanks all, I wonder how much it would be from the GP. I know she has used insurance before while on holiday so will do some digging, thanks so much.
