US: GOP wants to redefine "rape" to get around abortion laws

Federal money can (only) be used to pay for an abortion in cases of 1. rape, 2. incest, or 3. life endagerment. The GOP wants to change the law to specify that it's not really rape unless the victim is coerced by force - if someone beats you up, ties you down, or holds a gun to your head. A 24 year old who talks his way into a 13 year old's pants wouldn't count. If someone drugs a girl's drink at a party and five men "have sex" with her while she's unconscious - it's not rape. Date rape isn't rape. If a woman who has been in a coma for the last year is discovered to be pregnant - that's not rape. The law would also only protect against incest up until the age of 18.

I keep trying to find words for just how horrified I am. I want to cry, I want to throw up, I want to send thugs with baseball bats to teach object lessons in being victimized.

Noirem, that link doesn't seem to be working.  It says the page is unavailable.

I have never understood how anyone could be poor, gay, or an ethnic minority and still vote Republican.  Now I guess women have to be added to that list.  Do you suppose any of these people would actually make their daughter keep a baby that was conceived by a$$holes who drugged her drink at a party?

Yes, I think they would make her. That's the scary part.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Well, she shouldn't have been at a party, the little tart.  She should have been at church, surely.

Ugh.

So "just say no" works great for drugs (not) and pre-marital sex (not), but wouldn't apply as "being unwilling to have sex"?!

They always try this sort of thing.  I don't think, in fact I know, the majority of Americans won't support this.  Time for another rally.

Yep, stuff like this always reminds me of the West Wing when CJ says "you're a rabble rouser, you rouse rabble". This is posturing, I think. Disgusting. But posturing. Hopefully, though it prompts a civilised response that gets more people involved.

CJ is the best. I seriously have a crush on her. (And Allison Janney, for that matter.)

I'm currently re-watching Sports Night, but I think another run-through of at least a few seasons of West Wing wouldn't go amiss. :)
