US Citizens Renting Cars
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:57:50 AM »
I live in Leeds by way of having an EEA2 family permit. My parents from the U.S. are coming to visit this summer. They are a bit older and I am concerned about them both thinking of renting a car and of having to walk everywhere, as we live in the city center of Leeds and pretty much walk wherever we go. This might not be an option for them.

My mom proposed renting a car. Is this possible? I know it works for British citizens when they go to America, but what about here for U.S. citizens? Would it be possible for me to rent a car? I would be more comfortable with that.

Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

Thanks for any and all help.

Americans can rent cars in the UK.  My dad has visited me twice and rented a car both times.

That's awesome! I'll call some rental companies this week, but what about me renting a car if I live here on an EEA2 family permit? They might see that as differently (not a visitor). You never know.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm pretty sure you can rent a car no matter where you live.  I think the Rental agencies are more worried if you have a license and enough to cover the deposit. My first trip to the UK I rented a car in London to drive up to Liverpool, I didn't realize they would actually take money out of my account- 600 dollars I was out for the last half of my trip. They refunded it after I returned the car, but I was still shocked.
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

As for the OP renting a car it depends on how long you've been in the UK. If you've been here more than 12 months and you do not have a full UK License yet you won't be able to drive in the UK, let alone rent a car.

FYI - EEA 2 is the Residence Card and is valid for 5 years. The Family Permit is a 6 month entry clearance and should not be confused with the EEA2.

I've heard that there maybe problems if a person is over a certain age. (70?)
