Ideas for our honeymoon
« on: February 20, 2011, 07:59:57 PM »
Hi all!  Am looking for some advice if you don't mind.  We're trying to plan our honeymoon for May and neither have traveled too much around Europe.  We're thinking either Switzerland/Italy, Croatia/Greece, or Belgium/Netherlands/Germany.  What do you guys think?  Any suggestions? Advice? We need help!

I think any of those places have a lot of potential for a great honeymoon, but it all comes down to the things you want to be doing while you're there. Do you want a nice beach? Do you want to visit museums or places of historical interest? Are you more into city life or a rural countryside? (And so on...) Once you start considering what you want out of your trip you might be able to narrow down your options.  :)
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

Keep in mind that you'll need to get your FLR(M) before you head out on your honeymoon. Once you get married your fiancee visa is not valid for travel. So you may need to consider either a domestic honeymoon at the lakes or the peaks or shell out for an in person FLR(M) application and then wait 10 days for your biometric ID card before you can travel outside the UK.

We're actually going a bit unconventional because of this rule.  Since we're not having a traditional wedding (just going with our 2 witnesses to the registry office), we've decided to go on our "honeymoon" just before the wedding, our last stop being the registry office to get married.  Just didn't feel like a honeymoon in the traditional sense of the word if we had to wait weeks to go and I really hate the idea of forking out an additional 300 to have an in person app for flr(m).

That's a clever way of doing it Lisa!

We went with the domestic honeymoon option (Lake District) for ours.  We went to Windermere.  Was neat to have gone back there in October with our daughter and see stuff we'd seen as newlyweds  ;D

If you go to Belguim, go to Bruges. So amazing and our favourite European city by far. Hardly any chains (we saw a subway and a pizza hut that was hidden away - no mcdonalds or burger kings!), all independent restaurants. We cant wait to go back.

We stayed here when we were there in November and cant wait to go back. When we stepped into the bedroom, thought it would be ideal for a honeymoon. Breakfast was served to the door every morning (even the morning when they said they would be off as it was a national holiday!) When we were leaving they waited for our taxi with us and chased it up when it was late.

't Brugs Beertje is a must place to have a drink. Book reservations at Toms Diner (not a diner in any way, a bit pricey as it cost us about €100 for 3 courses with beer) as its one of the best meals we've ever had. Make sure to visit the Halve Maan Brewery - the last in Bruges itself. The brewery also has a restaurant and its VERY good.

The city is very walkable and very pretty. We missed out on the canal trips while were there (weather was rainy and cold - not the best for being on water) but a must do if its right. Theres also horse drawn carriage tours through out the city - very romantic! Loads of museums and events going on.

There are a lot of Americans there, which put me off a bit, but for the most part they arent like whats stereotyped when travelling. (we only came across one loud and obnoxious couple when we were in a particular bar and thought they knew it all about brewing beer. My partner is a home brewer and giggling when they were talking bs to the bartender)
