For all the Londoners: Can you recommend a place where I can get some work done (ie, reading, writing)? I can do this from home but have been freezing for the last few months and when inside leave the heater on practically all day.  :o  I would like to work outside the home so I don't have to pay for heat anymore  ;D. The British Library gets too full after a certain time and you are not allowed to keep your valuables with you in the reading rooms. I find that I need to keep my coat or at least a thick jumper on at all times. I'd like to avoid a place that sounds like a concert hall, where they are very rigid about having to buy something in order to stay, that has too many kids.... Any ideas?  I live in Islington.

May I add. Post delivered through your letter box in your front door (maybe not in your case because you live in a flat)

Also

Natural sprinkler system for the garden.

Lets not forget the great public transportation system

Just sayin'

For those missing Cold Stone Creamery, there's a Marble Slab Creamery here in Newcastle--might be worth looking near where you are.

As far as UK "finds" go, I love being able to get yogurt with the fat still in it (Yeo Valley and Duchys are my favourites).   Also, all of Waitrose.  ;)

Me too. Don't think it's a find though, as I think most people living in or moving to the UK are aware that the NHS exists.
(I would put free birth control as a find, though.)

Yes. I couldn't afford cable in the US.

Also, pubs on practically every corner (here in York anyway).  Not because I drink much, but because it's nice to be able to go out and spend time with friends without having to travel far beyond your front door.

-year-long farmers markets (especially since my DH is a market trader.  Even if he weren't, I love going to the markets.)

-umpteen abandoned castles that I've just stumbled on

-gastro-pubs

-Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire--okay, Wales countryside in general=gorgeous!

-My sweet DH and our two beautiful daughters that I never imagined would be a part of my life, but have left me feeling so blessed.

The only place I can think of is Borders, but I'm sure they're all probably in London. Maybe another bookstore similar?
There are two kinds of people.  People who say what they want, and people who DO what they want. Which one will you be?

Borders went out of business in the UK last year, or maybe even 2009.

End of 2009.  There were actually Borders outside of London (::)) and they all shut down in December '09.  I don't think bookstores are really a good place for working, tbh.  But surely there are other libraries in London besides the British Library?

There was one here.  It was the only place with a coffee shop that was open past 6.  ::)

The local government giving you £1000 to furnish your new council house if you don't have any furniture. Free, free and if and when you leave the council house they will give you £250 if you leave it nice and clean.

I wonder if they would do that in Georgia?

I wonder if they still do that here?

Considering there is a 8 year waiting list for a council house in my area, I'm thinking they don't have to pay all that often.  ;)

I quoted from a local council handbook that was updated last week.
