Fresh Artichoke in the UK?(not tinned/canned, hearts)
« on: February 28, 2011, 08:49:28 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy a proper fresh artichoke?  I live in Nottingham, and would be willing to drive quite a distance on this island  ;) to buy it.

Appreciate the input.

This is the kind of thing you'd find in waitrose while it's in season, which is summer - early autumn. You'd also should be able to purchase it from a number or organic farms that ship out veg boxes. They tend to call them globe artichokes in the UK, I assume this is to seperate them from the Jerusalem artichoke.

The only place I could think of possibly finding one out of season is a posh, specialty grocery. But I'd call ahead to check if they have any imported in.

Good luck!  :)

I recalled seeing one the other day and then I realized that I was in Spain! I hadn't really thought about it before since I rarely buy them. I'll keep my eyes peeled (I'm in Leicester-not too far!). Where in Cali are you from? How long have you been here?

I know I bought one when living in rural Cumbria at a farmers market... but they were definitely in season at the time so like Cali Girl said, sometime in late summer.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
