Filing taxes for US from Uk for the first time
« on: March 01, 2011, 09:30:44 PM »
Can someone please point me in the right direction in finding more information how to file US taxes from the UK? If there are other threads with this info, can someone guide me to the link?
Also, my dad has been doing my taxes for me so I don't have Turbo Tax, is that going to be a problem or are there forms I can just print off online to send in?
Thanks in advance!

Hello.

There is no difference regarding how to file US taxes, except you have an automatic 2 month extension to June 15. You may also file form 2555 to exclude upto $92,500 of Foreign Earned income, and/or get tax credits for tax paid here in the UK.

You can print off the relevant forms from irs.gov and do it yourself by hand, use Freefile, or buy a program to do it. Alternatively we would be happy to assist you if you'd like it professionally completed, ensuring you are taking advantage of the maximum benefits. Possible. email/PM me if you'd like more help.

You can use turbo tax for free most times thru the irs.gov website to file...Depends if you have a SO and with turbo tax I dont think you can efile if the SO doesnt have a SSN or ITN.

I used turbo tax to play with my tax returns before I just hired someone to do it.

Ok, so the only form I need to fill in is the 2555 or are there other forms? I can simply just print them from the IRS website and mail them in?

My DH does not have a SSN or ITN so I guess turbo tax isn't an option for me.
